They already have 2 characters with the same name on the roster after all, and also Mii costumes of existing characters as far as I know? Perhaps they weren't sure of how Splatoon would be received so just stuck with the costume initially. But yeah, after how big it's gotten, I'd think it's quite plausible for the future.
