I can't speak about it from a female standpoint, but it's akin to being an atheist. If there were an atheist movement that called itself 'Under God', I wouldn't think I was welcome there. If a female fan is looking at this community from the outside, and sees a 'Brony' forum, or IRC, I doubt they're going to think 'oh that's for me!'.
