  4. @scribus I love how a former user's comments on my behaviour here effectively created what would become this site's new unofficial tagline

  6. @flaxx I just own a physical copy of the comic, but you could probably find it online.

  8. @flaxx Yeah, lemme know if you end up checking out the comic

  9. @flaxx Yeah, Watchmen catalogs how the classic superhero tale is fundamentally flawed, and grapples with wider compelling sociopolitical issues

  10. @mushi I had some reservations about it but ultimately thought it was definitely worth watching

Friday, 12-Feb-16 00:47:32 UTC from MuSTArDroid in context
  12. @mushi It's definitely not a war or romance movie, as far as genres go it's basically a survival story.

  13. @flaxx Rorshach actually doesn't really have much of what could be technically considered an actual superpower, ultimately he's just a masked vigilante with strong beliefs that can figure really well. But what makes Watchmen interesting is that it's more interested in the specific social implications of superheroes as cultural figures, and utilizes the genre's specific storytelling beats to create a rich and multifaceted narrative about justice and morality. So characters exist as arbiters of Big Decisions and don't spend as much time hitting things hard with special powers so much as they pull apart heroism from its foundation. It's a really neat comic.

  14. @mushi Do you like more meditative and atmospheric films? Where it's more so the tone and environment that drive the narrative?

  15. @tiffany I hope they're okay

  16. @mushi If you're okay with some occasionally intense viscera then The Revenant, from a strictly visual standpoint, is one of the most gorgeously shot films I've seen in years. The cinematography is stunning and has a gorgeous sense of scenic colour balance, all with natural light too!

  17. @flaxx I don't mind the hassle if only because I like to be able to get out of the house to do stuff from time to time and if I'm going with friends it gives us an excuse to hang out. As far as superheroes go, my favourite comic is probably Watchmen, but in terms of films my favourite in the genre is probably still Hellboy 2. I also like some superhero oriented anime, notably Gatchaman Crowds and Concrete Revolutio.

  18. @mushi My recommendation for The Revenant is really circumstantial. I'd say it's worth your time if you're a patient viewer who likes really heavily atmospheric films with a strong sense of place (and is okay with some pretty visceral violence). Other than that, I'd say my recommendation is more of a maybe. It's a film with a very distinct set of priorities and that has already turned lots of people off from it, so it may not likely be your thing.

  19. @tiffany Most recent film I watched in the theatre was The Revenant, which was a gorgeous but somewhat exhausting piece.

  20. @flaxx I really like "superheroes" as a storytelling vehicle but tend to feel really lukewarm or negative on lots of popular superhero stories and films. I actually still quite like going to the cinema, but the comfort and convenience of home is hard to beat.

  21. @tiffany Same here, but I'm still skeptical. So I'll probably go there with friends if I see it.

  22. @mushi My brother's a big Dragonball fan but those big action shows aren't really my thing, these days I tend to prefer dramas and the occasional comedy.

  23. @tiffany I'm actually looking forward to Zootopia. The trailers, while not daringly original, hold a lot of promise for an engaging comedy.

  24. @tiffany This is basically what worries me, also I'm really just not one for toilet humour in general

  25. @mushi I don't even remember version I saw, it was just whatever was on the television. Was I was younger I'd basically watch anything.

  26. @flaxx Joking aside I'm honestly in no rush to see Deadpool, I'm not really a fan of the comics and will probably only end up checking out the film if some friends drag me along.

  27. @mushi I have not watched Dragonball since I was super young and it aired on late night tv, so I remember basically nothing about it.

  28. @mushi I haven't seen a whole ton of Toei shows, and most of the ones I have seen weren't really my thing, but they did do Kyousougiga a few years ago and I love that show to death http://i.imgur.com/NQ5YuSU.gif
