  3. @rarity That's pretty disappointing. She's one of the best musicians in modern r&b and would've put on an electrifying performance.

  4. @nerthos Instead of kryptonite they have balls of yarn

  5. @rarity I'm not watching the superbowl, but supposedly they were going to have Janelle Monáe but didn't. She definitely would've improved that halftime show.

  6. @clayinthecarpet I don't think I'd ever go out and buy one of their records or whatnot, but compositionally some of their early material was enjoyable balladry.

  7. @clayinthecarpet Coldplay have reached a status where they're essentially hated on principle at this point, which is unfortunate considering that even though I'm not necessarily a fan of them I've enjoyed specific songs by them here and there.

  8. @spots I've actually kept up with of their catalog, though generally their material has just been inoffensive maudlin pop rock at varying degrees of effectiveness.

  9. @spots The most middle of the road band ever.

  10. I actually had a great time with Force Awakens. It was a smart, fun blockbuster.

  11. @tiffany Ah yes, I'd read up on this but the name escaped me. Thanks!

  12. @awl This is true. Language itself kind of exists as an extension of our need of it specifically.

Monday, 08-Feb-16 00:21:12 UTC from MuSTArDroid in context
  13. Though sometimes I may not be studying language specifically so much as how and why we use it, but it's all under the same umbrella

Monday, 08-Feb-16 00:16:13 UTC from MuSTArDroid in context
  14. @awl It's something I try to do in my free time in spite of my busy schedule

Monday, 08-Feb-16 00:15:37 UTC from MuSTArDroid in context
  15. @mushi All joking aside regarding the fact that English is a borrowing language, it's actually pretty extrinsically complex considering the culture that inhabits and utilizes it.

Monday, 08-Feb-16 00:10:09 UTC from MuSTArDroid in context
  16. @awl Yeah, emojis prove the importance of connotation and implication in language (see: eggplant)

Monday, 08-Feb-16 00:05:29 UTC from MuSTArDroid in context
  17. @awl That's just a result of ignorance and elitism, and tends to stem as backlash towards any new widely accepted form (just look at how many contemporary art critics have discussed video games, for one thing)

  18. @awl Yup, their emergence and persistent tread towards ubiquity is a technological evolution of language, one both interesting and muddled in complex detail. It's certainly easy poke fun too, their simplicity both lends itself to learning and use as much as it lends itself to parody.

  19. @mrmattimation It's probably also why it attempts to explore ideas it doesn't possess the wit to really articulate or handle.

  20. @scribus This is how I feel too. I don't find her music specifically compelling, but I certainly appreciate her talents as a performer and her status as a role model for young women.

  23. @azureblaze I mean that beyond the sense of "talking words at each other", the actual concept of "language" is the acquisition of use of communicative tools to convey ideas, both structural and emotional. So to say emojis/emoticons will in their own way reduce linguistics to an absolute primitive state seems a bit presumptuous and lacks the basis of language as an ability outside of the written and spoken (though even in these contexts it falls apart at its own seams). In other words, it's boiling a complicated system down to something far simpler that's easier to understand but doesn't accurately represent its greater use.
