@metalnarwhal I'll try black metal since I still listen to a fair bit of that. Black metal, originating in the early 90s in Scandinavian Europe, is distinct from other genres of extreme metal music in that dynamically it's earliest groups featured very low fidelity recordings and had very high pitched shrieks in terms of vocal delivery as opposed to lower growls. The guitar portions are very important and often feature many heavy distorted tremelo picked sections that syncopate with blast beats on drums. Generally, song structures are unconventional and are usually short pieces or larger pieces separated by movements. The genre has since evolved to incorporate large amounts of atmosphere into its core sound, especially with newer waves of western black metal groups. This is pretty general but a basic idea of the genre.
