  1. @adiwan The roads systems have become a frightful failure on just about every front. I used to enjoy driving, heh

  2. Also the general inevitability of suicide attempt, or accident, or close call is pretty off-putting. Less terrifying on a bus than a train, easier to stop, able to swerve... like that time I almost ran over a doofus on a skateboard in all black with the hoodie up at night - WHEN THERE WAS A BIKE LANE they coulda been in!! ugh, people sometimes....

  3. My uncle makes pretty good money, and says the work isn't too bad, driving a cargo train (I always forget if he's the Engineer or the Conductor, and what the difference is). But the scheduling is nonsense! You have all these "windows," and need to keep checking online, and even when you're off you're on-call and need to respond within like 10 minutes... Sure, he claimed guys my age (at the time) were making a million a year, but screw that! My time is mine, man. And if I'm off the clock, I'm not likely to be *fit* to get called to drive a train, man... heh

  4. @adiwan I hate the very idea of being on-call O_O

  7. Man, I was gonna look into trying out a Diaspora* social network account, to see if maybe I wanted to use it for my own fedi backbone, but... it's looking like a big, fat "Probably not" based solely upon the fact that I wasn't able to find a good-looking server. I would go on to say "A good-looking server that didn't require a vague 'donation' or 'support' to join," but I couldn't even find one that didn't look like the default site. Boilerplate text, same damn image... I have Pleroma already, but I'm feeling pretty "over" (most of) the Twitter-style sites, and thus have no reason to even tinker with Mastodon to achieve the same effect. I suppose I am looking for something more "Facebook"-y, more fully-featured than Twitter/Pleroma/et al. And hey, Friendica supports OStatus, so....

  8. @adiwan I do miss me some all-you-can-eat sushi, or a night at the barcade. And I really need some tattoo work done. But that's unrelated, just another thing held up by covid.

  15. Well, I meanwhile *started listening to* the third season while I was doing some woodworking, and yeah I gotta agree S2 was like bookended by plot advancement and muddled through the middle with mere shenanigans. Glad to hear S3 picks up the pacing AND Elfo sucks less. I still suspect he will be Just The Worst, but less so. Lol

  30. Watched this documentary on "deep time" and human history last night. It was all like, "Columbus set sail because 5 billion years ago a planetoid hit proto-Earth, causing the axial tilt which resulted in the weather patterns which led to spices growing in India. Meanwhile, the Portuguese got rich off of a dying star 7 billion years ago, which resulted in a silver deposit in modern-day Mexico..."
