  1. Apple filing lawsuits against Samsung in France...should this even make the news anymore? Seriously, Apple's attempts to stop their competition (the Galaxy SII is the phone they seem to target specifically) are starting to leave a rather foul taste in my mouth =/ !techponies

    1. @leonkfox They're more bothered about the appearance of the phone than its status as competition, as evidenced by them leaving other manufacturers to sell better phones. (For instance, HTC)

      1. @ceruleanspark It looks a little bit like an iPhone 4 yes, but it's hardly the basis for banning its sale in I believe The Netherlands and possibly Germany as well.

        1. @leonkfox Well that's the court's basis for banning the sale. They consider that Samsung are profiting from Apples design. If Apple were worried about android as a whole, they'd be fighting with google about their multitouch implementation or some inane patent on app stores or syncing or something ridiculous like that.

          1. @ceruleanspark They were profiting from the phone's performance, everyone I know with a Galaxy SII praises its performance before they do its design. It's also as far as I've been able to see one of the few smart phones to come close to the levels of hype the iPhone does, so it doesn't seem like a coincidence that they're targeting that specific phone to me. (Android as a whole does yes, but that makes up a lot of phones)

          2. @ceruleanspark But...that's such a clueless thing to ban the sale on. There is so much prior art concerning one-button design that ruling in Apple's favour screams "judge was bought and paid". And Apple *altered* their "evidence" of Samsung being a copycat.

            1. @lilytheamazingfaintingpony I didn't say it wasn't a stupid decision. I was just outlining the decision making process. Personally I don't think much of Honeycomb and the tablets that run it in comparison to the iPad, so I don't buy into the "Apple is threatened" argument myself.

              1. @ceruleanspark Not trying to be a smart arse (and forgive me if I come off as one) but weren't we talking about the Samsung Galaxy SII and the smartphone market, not tablets?

                1. @leonkfox The tablets are the ones banned from sale in germany, so I thought that's what we were talking about

                  1. @ceruleanspark I'm pretty sure the Samsung Galaxy SII got banned in the Netherlands because of Apple's lawsuits, as I said I wasn't 100% certain about Germany in regards to the Galaxy SII being banned for sale there.

                    1. @leonkfox Ah, it was explictly Touchwiz they were suing over in the case of the S2. That app drawer and the square-masked icons and the automagic rearranging. In the case of the Galaxy Tab, it's because it looks exactly like an iPad.

                      1. @ceruleanspark Oh yes. The patent Apple actually got approved about "rectangular devices with rounded corners". #

        2. @leonkfox A: Has it actually been banned? B:Don't you think those lawsuits are also motivated by Samsung being very aggressively in marketing the Galaxy line as being the Apple-killer?

          1. @lilytheamazingfaintingpony Well it has been banned in the Netherlands ,and I THINK it's been banned for sale in Germany as well.
