        1. @tallbrony91 It's been fantastic, thank you for asking! Managed to finish a Java program I was having difficulties with (without the help of the teacher, no less), and worked on my animation in Flash. :D

          1. @flaxx Nice, what are yo Javaing?

Wednesday, 28-Sep-11 16:03:34 UTC from web
            1. @jinroh Just a really simple program, that let you enter one Swedish word and the translated English word, then it asks you if you want to enter more words, list the words you've already entered, or close the program. Yeah I know, it's really simply, but eh, I suck at Java. So I'm pretty happy I managed to get it to work.

              1. @flaxx Ah great sounds awesome for a beginning java program. ^^

                1. @jinroh Thanks, I appreciate it! ^_^

              2. @flaxx That sounds like a pretty fun project. I remember my first Java project. That was...unpleasant.

                1. @ceruleanspark Why was it unpleasant?

Wednesday, 28-Sep-11 16:14:37 UTC from web
                  1. @flaxx Write a program to control a robot to make it navigate a maze independantly, including picking up a can and moving it to a dropzone. Then have it go back the way it came.

Wednesday, 28-Sep-11 16:17:06 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
                    1. @ceruleanspark Well, I'd commit seppuku in 5 minutes, pretty much. Seriously, that was your first program ever? I don't even know where to begin on something like that!

Wednesday, 28-Sep-11 16:21:47 UTC from web
                      1. @flaxx Sort of. We'd been doing little programming activities over the course of the year leading up to that assessment, but that was the first time we were flat out given some requirements and no hints or clues. The message was about breaking a large problem into workable steps.

Wednesday, 28-Sep-11 16:24:24 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
                        1. @ceruleanspark Wow... That's pretty insane. I could never do anything like that. I can barely even make a simple text based program. :/

Wednesday, 28-Sep-11 16:26:39 UTC from web
                          1. @flaxx It wasn't actually so hard. The robot had 3 pressure sensors (Front left, front right and back). You just had to program it with a "response" to pressure on each sensor. The maze walls were all straight and all the turns were at predictable 90 degree angles, so the responses were typically some variation of "Stop, go back a little and turn a quarter or half circle, then go forward again"

Wednesday, 28-Sep-11 16:34:33 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
                            1. @ceruleanspark I see. But still, with my current programming skills, that'd be kinda like climbing Mt. Everest with flyjumpers while Godzilla was throwing moose and pineapples at you.

Wednesday, 28-Sep-11 16:41:17 UTC from MuSTArDroid
                              3. @flaxx That was our end of year final project, so it was supposed to be hard, and we had months to work on it, and we were allowed to share code, so long as we could actually explain what the code DID and why we'd included it after the fact. My final project there was to write a networked instant messenger. I found that MUCH harder. At least I could guarantee that no major components of the maze puzzle would randomly vanish halfway through execution.

Wednesday, 28-Sep-11 16:41:23 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
                                1. @ceruleanspark Oh, well, I guess it's not /that/ bad then, but still, I'd never be able to do something like that. And man, that sounds effing difficult. I hope my teacher doesn't make me do something like that, 'cause I'd fail completely. >.>

Wednesday, 28-Sep-11 16:46:16 UTC from web
                                  1. @flaxx It sounds a lot harder on paper than it actually was in motion. You just needed to get that collision detection right and then the rest fell into place. The networking thing WAS hard though. It was also the product of two years learning Java, so it was meant to be.

Wednesday, 28-Sep-11 16:48:31 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
                                    1. @ceruleanspark Yeah, I understand. Oh well, I've only just began with Java, so I guess it's not a huge surprise that I couldn't do something like that.

Wednesday, 28-Sep-11 16:51:57 UTC from web
                                      1. @flaxx well, I still have my notes and enjoy programming in general, so if you need a hand with something, let me know

                    2. @ceruleanspark Who programs robots in JAVA when you can use ASM?

Wednesday, 28-Sep-11 16:27:05 UTC from web
                      1. @jinroh People who're playing with Lego Mindstorms based bots. I think the university used an eclipse plugin to "convert" the java into whatever it is Mindstorms bots speak natively. It was a good exercise. Seeing your program control a physical device was a big psychological step.

                        1. @ceruleanspark Nice they do that at my bro's uni. I think it would be a fun little exercise. More interesting than most educational exercises.

Wednesday, 28-Sep-11 16:37:38 UTC from web
                          1. @jinroh It was way more interesting than watching a CLI increment a number to 10 like we did in our C programming classses, but actually getting time on the robot to test your app is a pain in the murdock when there's a reasonably full class and only 3 or 4 bots.

Wednesday, 28-Sep-11 16:42:50 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
                            1. @ceruleanspark Ah yes, that would be a pain in the flank.

          2. @flaxx Oh dude that's epic, what animation are you making, is it something to do with Ponies? :D

            1. @tallbrony91 Yep, trying to make a trotting Twilight animation. It's actually going better than I expected. I'm really new to Flash, so I don't really expect it to be very good at all.
