@bejoty @cabal @purpletinker Don't get me wrong, your article had good points and things we should be watching for, but I do kind of think the article could have touched on the subject a little more cautiously. While it did a good job warning of the dangers of being interviewed unprepared, it came off to me as "We must be normal, everyone who's 'different' stay away." which seems like a bad message when that would practically be the same thing they're doing, but looking for normal people instead of "strange" ones. Was this intentional or did it just end up like that? Just consider this a curious question.

@fallinwinter I had noticed that at the beginning of the drafting that we were coming off a little too authoritarian, I tweaked it to the best of my ability while adding the line that "we can't tell you what to do" bit. We did not want our fandom to be affected by what @purpletinker described as "renegades", to say, people who are completely twisted morally, ethically, and sexually. I mean, does idiot America want to know that all bronies want to have sex with fictional animorphic cartoon ponies? That is not what we are about here, and that was a cause for concern for what the shocumentary people might do if they get their grubby hands on a renegade. @thatonepony Thank you. @ponydude2143 I think there is a way, but unfortunately, we will just have to deal with the downtime of the link service for now.

@cabal I can see where you're going as far as the interests of everyone are concerned. Truthfully, I honestly can't think of any ways to avoid it sounding like that unless you were to just tell everyone "They dun like you now, deal with it"

@fallinwinter The problem is trying to find that balance of 'love and tolerance' vs public image. There's no possible way to represent an entire community through a handful of individuals, and when it's a matter of protecting how the masses view us before they can choose for themselves, I'd rather not have our chances blasted from isolated extreme cases. I personally disagree with the way these media outlets handle it anyway, but the PSA was primarily to keep people wary that they WILL pull out any quirks and twist them into stereotypes that affect us all.
Saturday, 15-Oct-11 00:41:12 UTC from web-
@bejoty Yeah, I get what you're saying. It's not easy to balance the fine line of "One sour apple ruins the whole bunch" and "If they're not willing to judge for themselves then they don't matter" I was just kind of curious what all your thoughts were on that and whether it was intended to come out as "normal people please move to the front" as it did.
Saturday, 15-Oct-11 00:51:13 UTC from web-
@fallinwinter Psh, normal people are boring. That's just all that media peeps can relate to to make themselves feel better about their lives. =P
Saturday, 15-Oct-11 01:09:27 UTC from web-
@bejoty I can agree with that. It's always either show normal people to make them feel better, or show them "weird" people and make them feel better. I dun geddit. Honestly, if they don't want to look deeper than what the news says, then that's their deal not mine. They're the one's who don't get ponies.

@fallinwinter Unfortunately TV media has that sort of sway, and I just don't want to have out community in a hole to dig out of. Anyway, I don't see this ending too poorly for us, even if the worst comes of this show. This is an unbelievably strong group.
Saturday, 15-Oct-11 01:23:57 UTC from web-
@bejoty Honestly, I'm less worried about what happens to the group after the inevitable happens and we're finally shown to a large audience through some sort of media and given a bad light. It's happened already multiple times and even though there's some who are angered, we tend to keep it moderately civil. I'm worried about the panic afterwards from people shunning out the "weird" ones so that we can maintain whatever stupid impossible standard for "normal" is to everyone else.

@fallinwinter The point of the article isn't "only normal people allowed". I'm far from normal myself. That's also why I keep myself far away from TV interviews. And that's the point: "We need good PR". That means we need a good public face.

@greydragon412 That's the point though, I don't want those thinking they're normal, to start trying to push everyone who isn't what they deem "normal" out of the community because suddenly we have a public face and we're going to be hated by people who don't even know the truth.
Saturday, 15-Oct-11 01:33:15 UTC from web-
@fallinwinter Look, I understand that we cannot stamp out bad media, and I am open to crit. However, this particular case (since they where requesting photos of people) the company was not out to produce a peice that was objective, but rather to portray a freak of nature for "entertainmaint" purposes. It is like like the furry CSI episode, it was not representative of furries at all. Although some aspects might be true, its a minority viewpoint that destroyed credibility.
Saturday, 15-Oct-11 01:38:07 UTC from web-
@cabal I get that. Honestly, I wouldn't want anyone agreeing to be interviewed on a show where the object of that show is to state that X group is weird and freaky. I just don't want people thinking that we have to worry about every little bit of press out there giving their opinions on us. It's like smiling all the time because a camera might go off and take your picture at any moment. If you do an interview and they ask about part the fandom you don't participate in, simply say you don't take part in it. The worst that would happen is they say we're "hiding it" or something and slander us, but what were you supposed to do instead? Whether we say yes or no to the interview, someone will give us a bad rep whether they interview us or not. It's a question of if we give them the chance to use our words correctly or if we just let them assume everything. My only other issue being because of press, we will go overboard and see normal as necessary and attempt some holocaust of the "weird".
