  1. Umm guys... my computer crashed last night and I had no backups so I lost everything. Also, my brother is here until Saturday, meaning we both have to share one computer with my dad, also meaning I can't even be a girl in private. Wondering if things can get any worse... :/

    1. @shydash Wow, that sucks. If I lost everything I'd probably start bawling. Oh great, now I'm paranoid.

    2. @shydash Awww...*huggles* I'm sorry dear, I recently had a lot of my files lost as well. I hope things get better for you dear.

    3. @shydash What happened to your computer. If you happen to need a tech pony, I'm here.

      1. @ceruleanspark I don't know. Was using it as usual. came into my dad's bedroom for just a few seconds, next thing I know, I have a BSoD followed by it failing to even detect the hard drive when I restarted.

        1. @shydash That is very strange. Is the Hard Disk detected in the BIOS when you first start it up? There's no removable media detected is there?

          1. @ceruleanspark Nothing is detected at all.

            1. @shydash Is it a desktop or a laptop?

                1. @shydash Longshot: have you checked the drive's physical connection to the rest of the machine?

                  1. @ceruleanspark My dad was going to look at it when he got home from work... I'm kind of tired right now to do anything myself... it's 5:30AM here and I haven't really gotten any sleep yet. But I will look at it later if I get a chance.

                    1. @shydash If you've got a blank 4gb usb key around, there's a backup plan you could use to get yourself some privacy on a shared computer.

                      1. @ceruleanspark Or, google chrome, incognito mode.

                        1. @nerthos Forget that. Real professionals use UNetbootin to create their own private linux install on a USB stick and then boot from that. Absolute privacy.

                          1. @ceruleanspark I never bothered to even try xD Besides from porn, what would i try to hide?

                            1. @nerthos I used it at school because it meant I could carry my own unrestricted, customised OS and all my files around my neck.

                              1. @ceruleanspark Well, that's a god idea. Never tought of it. Instead of that, i always cracked all the restrictions, grapesed the disk freeze, and things like that.

                                1. @nerthos Much easier to just reboot into Ubuntu and do as I please. The most work I'd ever have to do to achieve that is pull the CMOS battery to clear a BIOS password.

                                  1. @ceruleanspark They had the computers sealed, not because someone might break something; just so the students could not steal them or any part of them. Still, they were idiots, leaving the 110/220v switch in plain sight, without protection. A couple of PCs died that way. I think i'm going to do the USB thing in my brother's pendrive, he has to go to school for another 4 years.

                        2. @nerthos Also that way, she can use the stick as a surrogate boot disk in her own PC and not have to use the shared one at all.

                    2. @shydash Actually, if you're going down the USB key route you could actually continue to use your own machine, now that I think about it.

            2. @shydash As stupid as it may sound, try unplugging and plugging again the power and sata/ide cables. It worked for me a couple of times.

    4. @shydash Never jinx yourself by wondering that. Best to always assume that, yes, it most certainly can.

        1. @ceruleanspark Hello, Cerulean! I got about three more hours, and no more unsettling dreams, so well enough. Didn't want to wake up this morning, but I kind of feel like that most mornings. :p Anyway, I hope that you're holding up all right, there. :)
