  1. @tenmihara I'm sort of on-and-off with the idea of writing a short story about him. On the one hand, I want to, on the other hand, self insertion is the least popular of all the types of insertion.

    1. @ceruleanspark This is true. I've got a story underway myself, but there's really only two main characters, one of whom I already have the death of planned =P

      1. @tenmihara Well I was thinking of just writing it anyway. I'm not really interested in critical acclaim or anything like that. Writing is just fun for me, not SUPER SERIOUS BUSINESS MAGNUM OPUS territory.

        1. @ceruleanspark I largely write stories for myself as well, but having other people enjoy my work can often inspire my continued efforts

          1. @tenmihara The trouble is people are just gonna think "Self insert" and then stop reading.

            1. @ceruleanspark I suppose; but you could always make the character a separate entity from yourself, even if it does carry some similar traits

              1. @tenmihara That's what I'd have done anyway. I could literally think up a different name for him and people would never even make the connection I think.

                1. @ceruleanspark I suppose that depends on the characterization

Friday, 18-Nov-11 07:47:40 UTC from web
                  1. @tenmihara The characterisation would be intrinsically different. That's why I developed his backstory independantly, because that defines the sort of pony he'd be.

                    1. @ceruleanspark if that's the case, why were you worried about self inserts?

Friday, 18-Nov-11 07:51:46 UTC from web
                      1. @tenmihara Because people will see the name and not read any further. I really need to come up with a futurized version of his name.

                        1. @ceruleanspark Cobalt Blitz >3

                          1. @tenmihara I like Cobalt, but Blitz is a little too agressive for a messenger/prewar technology enthusiast.

                              1. @tenmihara I like "Cobalt Link" because a messenger is a kind of link between people. It's also sort of technological too.

                                  1. @tenmihara I got distracted by another project though. I'm writing a story about Heartstrings. It should be as horrific as it is emotionally scarring

                  2. @tenmihara I say intrinsically different because growing up in a postapocolyptic nuclear wasteland is kind of different to growing up in the first world pre-apocolypse

              1. @starlightbolt That's what puts me off! I'd stop reading if someone did it to me. Why would I subject other people to it?

                1. @ceruleanspark @starlightbolt Sometimes is a good thing, when done in a satyrical way, or just as a inner joke.
