@abigpony I choose not to self identify as one. Whether I fall into the category or not is completely independant of that.
-
@abigpony Hey, do you really skate?
-
@abigpony Do you gotta any footage on you? I wanna see what you got, haha. And thanks!
-
@abigpony Well here's my part in a video that my friends and I made: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_VrDvd3m3Q&t=16m20s
-
@abigpony Well at least I met another brony that's a skateboarding enthusiast. I tried recruiting a skater into the herd and he was into it for a while, but eventually he gave up on MLP.
-
@abigpony Yeah, I actually went on ponychan for help and one brony recommended that I should come here to look for anymore bronies in the area.
-
@abigpony Yeah, I guess I'm lucky I found you. Maybe now I'll have someone to talk about skating and ponies with, haha.
-
@abigpony And do you know any other bronies that skate?
-
@abigpony wait... there are EX BRONIES?
-
@getacutiemark There are also Fauxnies; watch out for them
-
@abigpony Damn, that's lame. So whatchu been up to today?
-
@abigpony I'm not the only one who thinks we don't need a CSI special to make ourselves look weird and creepy then.
-
@abigpony The only way this is physically possible of a following is if they do not consider themselves a group. Once you slap yourselves with a name, it becomes far easier to start pinning labels and misconceptions on you.
-
@abigpony Hmm. Actually, I guess you don't really need a "name", but once you're grouped together with other people suddenly their actions speak just as loudly as yours do. That's why I said that the only way to not get those "creepy people" in your group is to not be associated with one at all which is near impossible.
-
@abigpony That's what I mean though: This fandom is /already/ weird and creepy.
-
@abigpony I'm not convinced that it actually can. We've already got people who think it's a lifestyle and a religion, people who dolee compulsively to it, and people who advocate zoophillia. The boundary between us and furries is in name only.
-
@abigpony Yes. I refuse to even use the word to describe myself.
-
@ceruleanspark Not trying to be a smart arse, but if you're afraid of being a part of certain groups due to the burdens that come with them, how is it even possible to be a furry, let alone a fan of FiM/Brony, whether you use the terms to refer to yourself or not?
-
@abigpony @ceruleanspark No offence Cerulean, but I have to agree with abigpony on this one. I'm a furry, brony, hardcore gamer, wrestling fan...I have a ton of stigmas I have to put up with and yet remain part of the fanbase/engage in these things nonetheless.
-
@ceruleanspark @abigpony Not my intention, I assure you. Just saying you can't be a fan of these things and NOT get the stimga "normal" people plaster you with, it's a sad reality and I hate it...but nonetheless.
-
@ceruleanspark I think the problem is that people do not realize that "definition" is not the same as "what the x group thinks of us". In most cases the definition does not even exist since there are so many variations and beliefs on what it entails. I consider myself a brony, which I believe means that I enjoy the show short and simple. Regardless of what they say or think it means, that's my opinion and they can keep theirs if they want. I don't need to carry other people's stigmas because that's their deal and not mine. It'd be like being called Ken when you know your name was Tom. You just pass by because they weren't addressing you.
-
@egnaroesroh See, this is what I mean. What I mean by being part of this fandom does not necessarily mean the same as what an outsider might mean. I am not a brony by the definition most people use. Equally, I'm not a "real" furry by the commonly accepted definition.
-
@abigpony @egnaroesroh said what I'm trying to say more coherently. > If you can't stand the stigma from something, just leave it. Coming from someone who publically admits to hating this fandom but refuses to leave it, this is kind of hilarious.
-
@ceruleanspark I suppose we're saying the same thing, just going about it different ways. I'm doing so by just saying, "Yeah, I am a brony by my definition, not yours" while you take the, "There is no official definition of a brony, therefore it's far easier to just say I'm someone who enjoys the show and being a brony has nothing to do with it." approach. As a side note this is why people who say, "You don't do/say/know about X?!?!?!?!? Then you're not a TRUE brony!" are stupid.
-
@ceruleanspark I personally hate some aspects of this fandom, the porn, the really terrible gridmark fanfics, certain bronies being too much in other people's faces about the show etc, but I can't stop these things from occuring, and there are aspects to this fandom that I love, so if I have to endure that stigma just to be a part of them (and I have on numerous occasions) then so be it.
-
@egnaroesroh I find it somewhat amusing that the definition of brony seems to have very little to do with how closely you follow the ideals of the show.
-
@ceruleanspark I also find it curious as to where the community pulled "love and toleration" from considering last I checked, the show was more about "Go make friends and learn from your mistakes" than "love and toleration" One of the only moments I can think of is when Fluttershy managed to annoy Discord and even that's a bit debatable.
-
@egnaroesroh It's an easier catchphrase to manage. Also, essentially, the "go make friends" definition implies that they are not inherently perfect, which the vast majority of people will not admit.
-
@leonkfox I agree about the things you listed that that you dislike about brony culture. I stick my neck out still from time to time when it comes to showing others that I like MLP because, despite the risk or flat out rejection, I stand a chance of finding others to enjoy the show and merchandise with.
-
@abigpony Which is funny because the majority of people who use the phrase say, "No! You're supposed to love and tolerate!" Which is pretty much doing exactly the opposite of what you're asking them to do.
-
@egnaroesroh I want to know when "Love and Tolerate" became a threat.
-
@ceruleanspark I do not believe "love and tolerate" is easier to manage when more often than not, they prove that they cannot.
-
@abigpony Agreed.
-
@egnaroesroh It's easier to SAY. I mean.
-
@abigpony The issue is that while they claim it as a belief, it's become more of a slogan for them and they throw it at whoever they can. In that way it's become their own little religion that they're going door to door trying to sell to people by shoving it down their throat.
-
@abigpony Even I agree with this one.
-
@ceruleanspark Oh, well it is catchier I suppose.
-
@egnaroesroh I personally have never used the phrase "Love and Tolerate" because I know for a fact I have a very hard time doing that with people who give me hell for being who I am, I wish I COULD act out that belief 24/7, but the fact of the matter is that I can't.
-
@leonkfox The way I see it, it's still a nice thought, but it has to stay just a thought. Regardless of whether you can "love and tolerate" or not, that's just, like, your opinion, man. You know? Though perhaps if they'd just ask them to love and tolerate and just accept when they said no...
-
@egnaroesroh I dunno, in an ideal world everyone would love and tolerate, but since humans are natrually designed to be afraid of what they aren't used to, so it'll never happen.
-
@leonkfox Tolerance is a tricky thing. I think you may actually be hurting someone if you tolerate their behavior. Therefore tolerance and love can't always go together. I find 'respect' to be a much better word and always compatible with love.
-
@ceruleanspark You may find yourself interested in my thoughts on the definition of "furry" as I see it vs. how the community sees it #NSFW https://inkbunny.net/journalview.php?id=12866
Cerulean Lulamoon-Spark likes this. -
@toksyuryel I'm at work. I'll fav and read it later. Unless you want to summarise for me?
-
@ceruleanspark He's kinda saying what I went over previously. Because there is multiple definitions of "furry" and there is not official definition, he finds it easier to not call himself one until one if found.
-
@ceruleanspark I personally think it's worth reading, but I'm a bit biased since I wrote it. I can wait ^_^
-
@toksyuryel Sure thing! I'll check it out later today!
-
@toksyuryel oooh the trekkers gonna hate on you ;) + indeed, ponies don't have furs. they have coats. OnT: Never forget WWPD :) I myself have to this date not found anything to make me even the slightest part of the furry fandom (even if the pony-furry-venn diagram might have more overlapping than some other shows out there), but I don't know if that could change. Just like most of us were surprised by our love for pastel colored ponies, we might be surprised to find something about furries to like.
-
@bastuborste Part of my stance is based on the fact that I do not conflate "fan" with "like and enjoy" like most people seem to. The word "fan" comes from "fanatic", which implies a much deeper level of appreciation than simply liking and enjoying something- that's why I do consider myself a brony, because I'm pretty heavily obsessed with this show.
-
@toksyuryel I would have to agree on that :) A friend of mine has the same thoughts on bronies. She likes the show, but doesn't care at all about the community. Therefore, she does not see herself as a brony.
-
@toksyuryel I gotta agree. While I won't correct somepony if they call themself a fan, unless they're devoted on some level to the show, I don't consider them a true fan.
