I've decided that the #mane_six should be classified as older fillies, not mares.
Monday, 30-Jan-12 07:54:41 UTC from web-
@pony Faust said they were around 12-21.
-
@derps yep, but apparently that doesn't matter in Equestrian society. #spoiler #clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Q6WVzklw3Y&feature=youtube_gdata_player
-
@pony Mobile = Crap YouTube. I'll end up watching it never.
-
@derps AJ is referred to as "young filly" by an older pony.
-
@pony hm.
-
@derps plus, there's the commercial aired on the Hub in which Pinkie's voice is heard singing "we're awesome fillies." Of course commercials hold less weight.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTPqjKk_xCo
-
@pony Sorry if this sounds rude, I really do apologize, but I'm a little to tired to care at th moment. It's 3:13 AM and I'm just staying up to make sure my files back up properly.
-
@derps no I totally understand. It's pretty dead here right now..
-
@pony I honestly don't put too much weight in the terms filly and colt considering it's like us using the term girl or boy even though they're teenaged or early adulthood (18-20's)
-
@pony uh huh. I'm actually have ing a hard time typing, this is just my phones auto correct.
-
@egnaroesroh I just notice that several fans refer to them as mares, which doesn't seem accurate to me. (not like it's a big deal or anything.. it just bugs me a little.)
-
@derps so you're posting from your phone.. What are you backing your files up on? Does it have internet?
-
@pony drpobox
-
@pony I don't see how that's necessarily wrong though either. As far as I can see, they all hold some form of job or another and are self sustaining for the most part. Along with this they are at least somewhat close in age to the other ponies around town who aren't all exactly young either. They may seem like 16-20 year olds personality wise, but they are still acting more like the 25 year olds who have a stable job for the most part and have a home to come back to.
-
@derps ah ok.. dropbox is great!
-
@pony it tis. Great for uploading about 176 songs.
-
@derps o.o I didn't realize dropbox gave us that much space!
-
@pony I gues it does? ???
-
@egnaroesroh I see your point, but a large part of me doesn't want to recognize that fact. Faust described their behavioral maturity as being anywhere from 12-18 and reasoned that although they /are/ "young adults" they're only that way physically because equines mature physically much faster than humans.
-
-
@pony I thought he was being deliberately condescending.
-
@pony But the reasoning she gives is less "This is what makes sense" and more "I needed an excuse to make them non-children and this was as close to a plausible excuse as I could make up." Even with this, the question of "What makes a young adult a young adult?" is brought up. Is it their maturity level? (I've seen adults who act far more like children) Or is it their ability to sustain themselves? (A home and a job which /can/ be done by 16-18 year olds though is generally more difficult)
-
@ceruleanspark who was? Do you mean Faust (she)?
-
@pony I think he means the Flim Flam Brothers.
-
@egnaroesroh oh ok! yeah that's a possibility I've thought of. good point
-
@pony Flim/Flam (Also spoilers in the timeline OMFG)
-
@ceruleanspark heh! we're only 8 hours away from the deadline.. and only mentioning character names.. so hopefully there's no harm.
-
@pony I've just been yelled at for being less early to work than usual (but still early) so I don't care anymore.
-
@egnaroesroh Yeah, that's a valid question too.. where do we draw the line, and with another species no less? Still, in my culture 21-year-olds are called woman/man much less often than simply girl/guy. It's not incorrect to say "woman," but it sometimes throws me to hear it.. giving me the impression that she's at least 24. In the U.S. we're not even allowed to rent a car until we're 25.
-
@ceruleanspark bosses/supervisors are nuts sometimes!
-
@pony Being in Hawaii, and thus the US, I understand that our general use of guy/girl is used far into their 20's and sometimes even their 30's so it's rare, but in that case I say man and woman are more often used in a formal setting instead of due to age (after a certain point) So in this case the use of filly and colt could still be used to refer to anypony even into their older years and the terms mare and stallion are more often used in a formal setting as well.
-
@egnaroesroh I think my difficulty lies in comparing, say, Pinkie Pie to a college-aged young woman. Of course my image of all the mane 6 is skewed by the aesthetic differences between humans and cartoon ponies, but even Cheerilee looks and behaves older than Rarity or Fluttershy
-
@pony That's because Cherilees job has left her dead inside and incapable of joy.
-
@ceruleanspark Working with foals.. changes a person..
-
@pony I personally don't have a problem seeing them as mature. It's admittedly hard to see them as childish other than a few instances.
