!archlinux Can't wait till LibreOffice 3.5 gets out of testing. Arch Linux is so awesome to use <3

@omni Another linux user! WELCOME EVEN DEEPER INTO THE HERD! I only have arch on a virtual machine, but it is AMAZING... I completely agree.. though, personally I prefer OpenOffice :/

@the20percent Well, duh, of course I use Linux. Why would I settle for anything that I cannot customize to my personal needs? :P And preferring OpenOffice? Interesting choice. May I ask you why?

@omni just used it longer, though from my experiences with libre, the spreadsheet program is better. On my desk, I have 3 computers. 2 of which are running gnu/linux, while the other is a crappy school computer which has a locked bios so I can't make it run linux... on top of that, but those bloody idiots that run the school's tech support actually DO NOT ALLOW linux on it, and instead go for Microsoft... so this is why the school's networking constantly goes unstable, and it takes 10 minutes to start up...
Friday, 17-Feb-12 15:06:42 UTC from web-
@the20percent Network instability isn't an MS feature, it's an "incompetant network admin" feature. The network I run is based arounds Windows Server, and my uptime is in the 4-9's range.

@ceruleanspark its how they secure the network that shoots them down.. they use a certificate system, and those certificates either keep getting revoked, or they expire too quickly... and its funny because it takes a day for them to bring the wireless back online...

@ceruleanspark That sounds like a strange feature. Oh well, at least it's not a bug :P

@ceruleanspark on top of that, but MS is more insecure... I have a friend who usually writes code to either break code or windows IN JAVA XD (he also writes a ton of broken code, mind you)... anyway, he wrote a program that executes commands sent from a network (you could open up the port to the internet and see how many seconds it takes to delete system32

@the20percent ), it works since the JVM opens up as an administrator

@the20percent Any poorly configured system is inherently insecure.

@the20percent My school uses Windows as well, no matter how many issues it causes. People are afraid to try something new but everyone I got so far as to try Linux never wanted back. Going to my owner for a week and will probably get a chance to install Linux on her system for her to try. Hope I can convert her and get her to like it. As a slightly paranoid user who virus-scans almost hourly having a system that's much more secure will surely cause her some relief
Friday, 17-Feb-12 15:10:04 UTC from Choqok-
@omni be sure to fill her in on the permissions systems..
Friday, 17-Feb-12 15:12:43 UTC from web-
@the20percent Permission systems? What should I tell her exactly? (I'm planning on giving her a simple KDE desktop, she's somewhat afraid of terminals, like most Windows users)
Friday, 17-Feb-12 15:14:38 UTC from Choqok-
@omni afraid of terminals, eh? wierd... well, every time she tries to download an executable, just tell her to right click, properties, permissions, and allow to run as executable. Tell her that's a security feature that helps protect the users from unwanted viruses... though do warn her that that security feature will not protect her if she gives permissions to bad programs
Friday, 17-Feb-12 15:23:31 UTC from web-
@the20percent Yeah, that would help I guess. She'll be most likely to just download applications from Apper (KPackageKit, "Software Center") probably though, I'll teach her that :P Hope she'll give it a try :P

@omni Schools use Windows because businesses use Windows.

@the20percent Do you count as a linux user if you don't actually have it running on hardware?
-
@ceruleanspark A state of "I would like to use Linux but the location I am in forces me to use another OS"?
Friday, 17-Feb-12 15:05:00 UTC from Choqok-
@omni I meant him. I'm sharing a room with a pair of linux servers right now.
-
@ceruleanspark Oops, I failed to read who that was adressed to. My bad.

@ceruleanspark you count as a linux user if you use it more than a third of the time you use a computer... bare minimums right there...
