Saw the news this morning with an article about Anonymous, in the short video Ubuntu 10.04 LTS was used and a download with !Linux in the name was clearly visible. Slowly but surely Linux is getting more and more attention, even if it are just little things.

@omni Is attention via Anonymous good attention though?
-
@greatandpowerfuleaglehooves Well, the only thing that happened in the video was some guy downloading a Linux framework with Firefox for something and typing "exploit" in a gnome terminal window so I don't consider it bad. At any rate, it catches people's attention. There are enough companies that are known for not-so-good things (like the scamming on eBay) but it still causes more visitors to the site whenever there's an article about them. Seeing how the screen clearly showed the word "Linux" I'd say that it will at least get one person to think "what's that? Let me Google it", which is a good thing.
-
wow, you are in old identica :)
-
@omni Maybe. I know I've mentioned it to my family in the past though, and I got about as far as explaining that Linux refers to all OSs that share the kernel, not like Windows one product at a time line before they lost interest and went back to downloading malware.
-
@omni I don't know about you but typing "exploit" into my terminal windows is how I do all my hacking.
-
@ceruleanspark I just realized how disappointed I am in you Cerul.
-
@greatandpowerfuleaglehooves I told my parents that Linux works completely differently from Windows and, because you get your programs from a central server from the company that made your product it is practically impossible to get a virus. Got my dad to give Ubuntu a try and he still enjoys it at times because it is genuinely an easy product for him :P Most people know nothing of computers and just want a simple system, going into the technical side is going to make you lose then :P
-
@carcino Oh no. How will I ever live with the crushing shame
-
@ceruleanspark Using metasploit? Like, for real? Brb, hacking school network :3
-
@ceruleanspark By leaving the Brotherhood of Steel.
-
@omni Well, that and the various other lovely tools in Backtrack.
-
@carcino Wait what.
-
@ceruleanspark Your avatar has recon armour and a Gauss rifle.
-
@ceruleanspark Ah, BackTrack, I've heard good things from that as a security distribution.
-
@omni It's basically a heavily customised Ubuntu with a bunch of useful pentesting tools baked in.
-
@omni I gave them the tl:dr of that, actually.
-
@carcino Hell yes. Outside of the capital wasteland, the brotherhood are kind of huge jerks. I don't want anything to do with them.
-
@ceruleanspark DO you know kde?^^
-
@ceruleanspark Didn't know it was Ubuntu-based, thanks for the info!
-
@greatandpowerfuleaglehooves Ouch, that's suicide :P
-
@omni It used to be Slackware based, but they recently moved to ubuntu as the core.
-
@ceruleanspark Brotherhood was fine in one and two. I hated them in 3 because they were like white knights. I extra hate them in new Vegas because their whole quest line is god awful.
-
@firelicorn A KDE user? I switched from KDE to awesome for my window manager but I still use a lot of KDE software and even have a KDE launcher theme on my Android phone :P
-
@ceruleanspark Ah, cool, thanks for the info.
-
@firelicorn My very first Linux distro was based around KDE. It was terrible, but KDE is fine. I prefer XFCE nowadays though.
-
@omni Yep using kde on archlinux
-
@omni "It's an operating system that's not Windows. There's several... You don't care do you?"
-
@carcino I didn't mind them in 3 because they actually got mangoes done on the side. NV's ones infuriate me because the layout of their bunker is a clustermurdock and they all seem to be monumental assholes.
-
@ceruleanspark My first Linux distro was SuSE Linux 9.1, came with a book on Linux I got from my parents :P
-
@ceruleanspark You'll save yourself a lot of trouble if you just kill them all every time like I did. Enclave for life.
-
@omni Xandros on an EEEPC 701 here. The little machine that could.
-
@carcino I'm just getting their questline out of the way in NV so I can get the power armor perk. The next main quest I have from Mr House IS actually "Murder all of them plz"
-
@ceruleanspark Ah, EEEPCs, cool o,o
-
@ceruleanspark You can get power armor training from the Enclave, It's easier and the armor is better.
-
@suhaib I'm actually on Rainbow Dash Network, but it seems to be coupled to identi.ca in a strange way. Not sure how Status.Net networks actually work but I seem to get used to it :P
-
@carcino Doesn't the remenants power armor have horribly low durability compared to the brotherhood one?
-
@ceruleanspark No idea, I jury rig it. Also, Legio est melius.
-
@suhaib parallels words!!!!
-
@carcino That sounds like legion talk to me. I already killed everyone in the Fort and in Cottonwood cove.
-
@ceruleanspark So did I. And it is Legion talk.
-
@carcino GAUSS RIFLES, GAUSS RIFLES, GOD I LOVE GAUSS RIFLES. DEAR MR HOUSE, EVERYONE IS SO DEAD.
-
@ceruleanspark PLASMA CASTER.
-
@carcino YCS/186.
-
@ceruleanspark YOU'RE OLD. MR. HOUSE IS A LOSER. ARCADE IS HOMOSEX AND I HAVE A DOG. FEEL MY LIGHT IN SHINING DARKNESS' WRATH.
-
@carcino I was wondering who your companions were. ED-E and Boone for life. Also Energy weapons > Projectile weapons
-
@ceruleanspark I swap around. I use guns until I save up enough energy cells to end the game using energy weapons. Because none of the later guns break anyone's DT. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWrG5qiX2ZA&feature=youtube_gdata_player
-
@carcino Enclave sucks. Just putting that out there.
-
@ceruleanspark Es MERETRIX!
-
@carcino I cannot endorse any faction responsible for the death of Liam Neeson.
-
@ceruleanspark You have a point. But AMERICA! And and and and and and Amata is a whore and and and and and Duke Nukem is a bad game.
-
@carcino I'm not going to pretend I didn't shoot everyone in Vault 101 and then burn the corpses.
-
@ceruleanspark Even Butch?
-
in parallels worlds!!!!
