Does anybody have any experience with SDL on Linux? I broke SDL on my Arch Linux (32 bit) and I can't start any SDL-based game anymore. They're all stuck on "loading sound". Any clue what I can do?

@omni You linux guys always manage to forget you have to sacrifice a goat for stuff like that to work.

@colfax More like: I've been installing unsupported packages again without reading what they do

@colfax It's funny because everyone says Linux "just works". From what I've heard, it sounds like a high-maintenance operating system.

@redenchilada It "just works". It really does. But if you are like me and do the equivalent of installing virus into your Operating System because you ignore all warnings then it becomes a high-maintenance system, yes.

@omni My reason for not using Linux is that there are a billion different varieties of it. It's quite intimidating to an outsider.

@redenchilada Ubuntu is a nice basic one that literally requires nothing of the user as long as they aren't looking for anything complex

@redenchilada That is the best pro and worst con of Linux, yes. If you can tell me what you are looking for in your operating system I could recommend you one to try once though. Most come with a Live CD that you can put in your CD drive to test them without installing the OS.

@omni Is there one that would run well on an ancient desktop, possibly as a server? I'm talking, like, 256MB of RAM.

@redenchilada Ancient desktop, huh? Well, you'd probably want something with an LXDE desktop then. Could give Lubuntu a try, it's made just for weak systems: http://lubuntu.net/ - It's not specifically made for servers though. Not saying you can't use it as a server, just that there are probably better choices if you want it to be a server but I should look a bit around for that.

@redenchilada It's pretty simple, I've got it running on my other computer just cause my Windows XP broke and I have never had to do anything special for it, it only appears to be when you start really customizing it that you might run into problems
