Struggling to decide on which distro flavour is best for getting people into !linux. Been thinking about !mint lately, but which DE?
-
@mvdan Are these people gonna explore Linux further, then yes.
-
I'd say so about debian, gentoo or arch, but mint... isn't it designed for ease of use and functionality?
-
@mvdan B/c it's based on Debian you can learn more and Mint is an easy to use distro.

Of course, debian-based. AFAIK mint will drop ubuntu soon.
-
@mvdan True... With Debian is lighter and more responsive!

@mvdan technical/power users/other proficient with computers → kde, yo' grandma → any netbook shell, else → ?
-
Hmm, not very into kde nor gnome3/unity myself. I'm not sure between Xfce and Cinnamon (never used any of the two unfortunately)
-
@mvdan openbox
-
Used fluxbox for a while. Is it about the same, or easier to set up? Maybe works on top of xfce?

@mvdan Mageia rocks, specially v2, coming soon
-
@mvdan I doubt one DE can satisfy everyone. My father is just getting comfortable with gnome-shell after having tried several options.
-
@mvdan and, very importan, after you setup the system lock the widgets, otherwise you'll be called regulary about missing tray/panel )))
-
Hahah, fair point :)

I must say that the Lxde version just released is very fast and rather smooth. I would say that or Lxde.
-
Yep, thanks :)
