      1. @scribble I just hate it all... My stepdad told me this morning that after I left he had a big war with my mum on the subject. She hates it and he doesn't care at all, (still throws jokes but he says he doesn't care).

      1. @pawnheart Just... Awful problems basically involving my mum. And to top it off, when I finally said this morning that Im taking a college IT course; she and my stepdad shot me down saying I was a lazy snob for trying to avoid a manual labour job

        1. @purplephish20 (sigh) I hate that kind of kiwi. Sometimes you can't win, can you?

          1. @pawnheart I express that I don't want to be making sandwiches for the rest of my life and they condemn me for it, saying everyone who wants to avoid manual jobs are lazy and always fail

            1. @purplephish20 I can phone them up and tell them to where to get off. If they want to be lectuered by a college dropout turned IT manager about failure.

              1. @ceruleanspark Ha... How did you get there may I ask? Into that Job position?

Friday, 20-Apr-12 14:30:38 UTC from web
                1. @purplephish20 I dropped out after AS, then spent 8 months unemployed, I took some cheap courses through the jobcenter, then applied for entry level jobs that I qualified for with the AS levels I /did/ have. I managed to get a job with a fairly nice company, who paid for me to take a HNC course in IT. Then my boss kind of flipped the hell out and took to workplace harrassment, so I applied for my current job on the strength of the experience I had and the qualification they paid for. I got it and now I'm here. From drop out to manager in two jobs.

                    1. @purplephish20 To give an indication of how unsupportive my parents were, my therapist went on record as saying "They seem unpleasant"

                      1. @ceruleanspark Why would YOUR parents have been unsupportive? You didn't work for THEM did you? That's the problem for me, my mum just wants me to stay here

                        1. @purplephish20 My parents just don't give a cherries. My mother told me to my face that she couldn't care less if I took my own life. That's something that has always stuck with me, and I think has caused fairly significant damage to my self esteem. Perhaps you can imagine what it is like to feel so worthless that even killing yourself wouldn't make a difference.

                          1. @ceruleanspark That sounds worse than I could ever imagine... I'm sorry... That must be terrible

                            1. @pawnheart Well my dad is far from that, with the exception of sport we share interests, and I built a proper relationship up in the last year which I always seemed to disregard when I was younger

            2. @purplephish20 Yeah, Bill Gates is such a huge failure...

Friday, 20-Apr-12 14:26:45 UTC from web
              1. @colfax And Steve Jobs too, that guy was the biggest failure ever, what with not having a labour job in his prime and all.

                1. @leonkfox And he showed up to work in jeans and sneakers al the time, it's like he didn't even take his work seriously.

                  1. @colfax Totally! (In all seriousness, the idea that non labour work is outdated at best, friggin' ignorant at its wost.

            3. @purplephish20 Well, they're wrong... and though I hate to seem judgemental... that sounds like bitterness to me.

              1. @purplephish20 It's one of those things in which - through the others eyes - you can never be in a pleasing position, so it's a game not even worth playing IMO. When I was unemployed, I got criticized for being lazy; when I was employed in a soup kitchen, it was considered go-nowhere; when I tried to pursue music, I was criticized for being naive and unrealistic.

                1. @pawnheart Well I started a music course in late 2009... I quit it because the course itself was VERY badly run, they had no bloody lesson plan and the teachers were obvious potheads, and some of my classmates were...... Scum of the earth variety, I count myself lucky that every single person in my current college groups are great likeable people

                  1. @purplephish20 Sounds like you know what you want, and what you are dissatisfied with, which is a good thing.

        2. @purplephish20 Non labour jobs are lazy? She's clearly never worked in your average office.

Friday, 20-Apr-12 14:24:03 UTC from web
        3. @purplephish20 But that means I'm lazy too! D: Oh wait, I am. Seriously though, I'm sorry you have to go through that. Wish there was something I could do to help. :/
