Every time I've looked at the affiliates list, there are twice as many buttons as last time (except the first time, since there was no affiliate list before then). I'm rather hoping that trend doesn't continue, if only for the sake of the sidebar's structural stability. :P

@bitshift and ain't ponysquare a sort of rival to RDN?
Saturday, 05-May-12 18:13:56 UTC from web-
@techdisk42 Eh, not so much. There's overlap, but the PonySquare/RDN relationship is more like Facebook/Twitter. They do a similar thing, but not really the _same_ thing.

@bitshift You know, that makes sense. We are twitter for sure.

@ceruleanspark Oh, cool. That sounds like a pretty good one, and I'm not really opposed to adding affiliates (within reason; if the entire bar is taken up with dozens of affiliates, that might start to be a problem), I was just rather (faux-)alarmed at the apparently exponential growth of the number of buttons. :P

@bitshift Well I was gonna put an adbox at the bottom of the timeline. Charge $20 a week or whatever for it.

@ceruleanspark At the bottom? I mean, I guess that's considerably less intrusive, but just from seeing what age of posts do/don't tend to get responses, I can't imagine that many people actually scroll down that far very often. Still, I guess if it works out, it works out. :)

@bitshift Well that's the thing: If I put it anywhere else the whining will be unimaginable

@ceruleanspark One of the reasons I liked this site from the start was the lack of ads... I would be fine with one at the bottom, though. As long as the site layout doesn't change to accommodate it.

@techdisk42 @bitshift Well, if you don't like ads you could always donate...

@colfax I seriously would. I just don't have a credit card. Or paypal. Dangit, being 16 isnt what it's cut out to be.

@colfax I did recently (a week or two back, at a guess). And I was mostly commenting on how it seems the only position for it that'd avoid widespread complaining (whether justified or not) is also one where it'll end up mostly unseen. Which is definitely not ideal.

@colfax I'm certainly not opposed to ads (again, within reason; if the entire first page's worth of space was one big ad, that'd be pretty stupid) either; I have adblock disabled here already, to ensure that I don't unknowingly block any potential ads. Basically, if ads are what it'd take to keep the site alive, then ads it is. I'd rather see it alive than ad-free, if those become the only two options.
