@cavatina I'm a fan of irssi personally, as far as IRC clients go. screen combos well with irssi. You can also install and run a bitlbee server so you can access all your IMs via any IRC client. vim would be my favorite text editor (comes in a GUI variety, gvim). mplayer2 is a great media player (if you prefer a GUI, consider audacious or vlc). zsh is a great shell, much better than the default bash. rxvt-unicode (urxvt) is an excellent terminal emulator with unicode support. tmux for terminal multiplexing (it's much better than screen, but screen is still needed for some vital irssi scripts like nicklist). I like to use fluxbox as my window manager, it's very light and unobtrusive. These are just what I like, feel free to pick and choose whatever you also like :) some essential utilities would be ffmpeg for video editing, sox for audio editing, and imagemagick for image editing. Also cdrtools for things like cdrecord is nice to have if you like to burn CDs.

@cavatina Some of these will already be installed on your system and some will be pulled in for you by other packages. As far as games go: NetHack is pretty much standard, not installing it is not allowed. If you like RTS games, I highly recommend Warzone2100. If you happen to own Spacechem, you can play it if you have or install mono.
