  1. # # But for real, can somebody here please explain to me how Evangelion makes sense? I never got the point behind it, though I only saw the first 2 or 3 eps. It seemed to jump around in a weird way that didn't register for me enough to find it interesting.

    1. @clayinthecarpet If you got confused 2-3 episodes in you will definitely not get the rest of the anime, that was still in the more normal part of the anime

      1. @scoot I see. Well can anyone explain why it's so nuts?

        1. @clayinthecarpet "Much of the series's content was based on Hideaki Anno's own clinical depression" it's made by someone with serious issues and the anime reflects that

          1. @scoot So there IS no point or explanation to the crazy, really? Like, there's no conclusions that can be drawn, definitively, from it?

            1. @clayinthecarpet There ARE reasons to most of the themes and elements in the anime but you really have to go to the wiki to read up on them, or try to figure them out as you watch it yourself. I can't explain Evangelion to you

              1. @scoot I see. Yeah, I've tried to approach the series twice now, at different times in my life, and I still can't understand what the mangoes is going on.

                1. @clayinthecarpet If "It must make absolute sense" is what you want then this is not the anime for you.

                  1. @scoot Well not ABSOLUTE sense, but I would like for the overall theme of something to be...coherent. This thing doesn't seem coherent in the slightest. It just seems crazy and unexplainable. More metaphor than should be necessary, I think. It's just too smart for me, I guess, overall.

                    1. @clayinthecarpet The first few episodes DO make sense though, at that point it's just "crying kid get in the robot", later on is when it goes weird

                  2. @scoot I share a similar frustration with 2001: A Space Odyssey...Parts of that movie make damn near zero sense and nobody will relent in explaining the ending, as they don't feel it necessary. I just feel puzzled and confused about something that I really WANT to enjoy every aspect of.

                    1. @clayinthecarpet You don't have to understand something to enjoy it

                      1. @scoot I feel conflicted if I don't understand the message of a piece of art. I can enjoy watching/viewing it, but the confusion and frustration turns me away, sadly enough. I like an artist's vision to be TOLD in a way that their viewers can understand. It's just one of my personal opinions.

                        1. @clayinthecarpet That seems relatively restricting. A lot of things require a lot of thought before you truly understand what the artist had intended and working that out is a big part of what they were trying to convey. (Also NEVER do Fine Art as a subject)

                          1. @scoot I just am not smart enough to get it. S'all there is to it. I need ideas spoon-fed to me in a way that I can see what they intend, and THEN compare and contrast it with the ideas of myself and society. I can't be assed to sit and ponder forever about ideas that seemingly don't make any logical sense from some artist who refuses to tell you anything about their meaning or purpose. Why would you not want your fans to know your art's purpose? It seems counter-productive. I don't know. Whatever.

                            1. @clayinthecarpet Alright I won't press the subject, but they DO want their fans to know their art's purpose, they just want their fans to work it out for themselves.

                              1. @scoot And I can't work Evangelion out. It's as simple as that. I've read the Wiki and other info and it just makes zero sense to me.

                              2. @scoot I guess it's 'cause I'm stupid, I don't know. I'd prefer not to dwell on it, though. I don't think too deeply about most topics, anyway.
