    7. @oracle I'm just concerned that you seem to have come to believe that claims made in fictional stories based on interpretations of scripture (and other stuff?) are worth calling doctrine.

      2. @tia I don't mean this in an offensive way. But, couldn't you just say the exact same thing about the Book of Mormon in regards to the Bible?

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 07:44:03 UTC from web
        1. @rarity or maybe the bible in regards to the Tora

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 07:45:07 UTC from web
        2. @rarity That's a common question. The The Bible includes two testaments of God's work and Christ's role among mankind. The Book of Mormon is yet another testament of Jesus Christ. They're all canon to us, written by prophets and, inasmuch as they're translated correctly, we believe them to contain truths pertinent to our salvation.

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 07:53:00 UTC from web
          1. @tia and how can you know that these fanfictions oracle was talking about aren't the works of prophets?

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 07:54:22 UTC from web
            1. @rarity I didn't say they don't contain truth in them, but I look skeptically on all new literature honestly. I wouldn't outright deny it though without first understanding it. We believe in continuing prophetic revelation.

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 07:59:26 UTC from web
              1. @tia are you obligated by your faith to understand it?

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 08:00:36 UTC from web
                1. @rarity We're all obligated to do the best with what understanding we can achieve and to seek more our whole life. To clarify, we're led today by the only living mortal prophet, which is who oracle was talking about.

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 08:07:33 UTC from web
                  1. @tia you should write fanfiction, who knows? Maybe when that older guy moves on your fanfiction will be doctrine

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 08:16:33 UTC from web
                          1. @rarity I believe you. It helps that you clarified honestly. The use of "fanfiction" made it sound like you were intentionally disrespecting the Book of Mormon. Whether or not that's the case I'm not bothered. I can tell you mean to be respectful.

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 08:22:54 UTC from web
                    2. @rarity You use the word fiction, but the Book of Mormon actually presents itself as a factual history of the people in ancient America with heavy emphasis on spiritual subject matter.

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 08:17:32 UTC from web
                      1. @tia I was using it more as a way to mean "adding on to the source material by someone other than the original author". ...although now that I think about it, you'd explain that as "all the works are written though god" or something similar? Well anyways I was just using it as a filler word

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 08:02:10 UTC from web
      1. @tia everything about your faith is so contrary to many aspects of Christianity, it's confusing

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 08:04:07 UTC from web
        1. @rarity I can understand why. Firstly, there are a lot of misconceptions about Christianity in general thanks to extremist propaganda on both sides. Secondly, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is fairly unique as far as christian faiths go.

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 08:12:05 UTC from web
          1. @tia how do you explain the discrepancies between Christianity and Mormonism? Because I thought you guys held the Bible in as high a regard as regular Christians.

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 08:14:04 UTC from web
            1. @rarity We believe that it's correct inasmuch as it's translated (and interpreted for that matter) correctly. This, plus the fact that we receive continued instruction and guidance from the Book of Mormon and living modern prophet, set us apart doctrinally from other churches.

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 08:20:57 UTC from web

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 08:18:17 UTC from web

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 08:24:07 UTC from web
        1. @tia I would... really rather not get in to the details of the Book of Mormon. for the sake of being respectfull

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 08:27:21 UTC from web
          1. @rarity I was just pointing out that it's on par with the Bible.

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 08:28:39 UTC from web
            1. @tia well, I actually do want to ask one thing for clarity's sake. according to Revelations, the next time that Jesus would appear on earth would be the end times, the rapture, everyone who believes in JC gets to go up. So how did Jesus appear in America? Do you just disregard the prophecy of Revelation?

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 08:31:32 UTC from web
              1. @rarity I'm not an expert, but if I recall correctly, the verses in the Bible that describe the second coming explain that he won't set foot again on the earth until the latter days. Our day now is the "latter days," and yes, we believe he'll appear again soon though nobody knows exactly when and anyone claiming to know is a fake according to scripture. We just know it will be "soon." When Christ visited the Americas he didn't actually set foot on the Earth. He just floated there. Why probably has to do with that prophecy I mentioned and that I think you're referencing. Christ appeared to his disciples in the New Testament after his resurrection and this didn't count as his big Second Coming after all.

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 08:45:55 UTC from web
                1. @tia saying "he was technically floating lol" is pretty much just playing with semantics. I never was counting his Resurrection after the 3 days as the "second coming". If I remember my Bible (and I used to be a very good Christian boy) He did walk with his disciples, if you want to do semantics. IF he somehow appeared in the Americas simultaneously, I can get how it wouldn't count as the second coming.

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 08:51:23 UTC from web
                  1. @rarity I have a possible response to your point about him walking with his disciples, but I'd need to confirm it before I can feel comfortable saying it. Also, the details of my previous dash, too, may be faulty. the whole "set foot" thing specifically. That's just what I remember reading, and it's been quite a while. In any case he did visit with his disciples, and I don't see why visiting "other sheep which are not of this fold" (http://www.lds.org/scriptures/nt/john/10.16#15), should be contrary to any prophecy. Unless you have the verse in Revelation about him supposedly not appearing again until his second coming, it's hard for me to respond to it at the moment. I know I've heard an explanation for it before, but I don't have the will to search online nor my old reference book.

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 09:04:01 UTC from web
                    1. @tia In case you're curious, we use the King James Version of the Bible, one of the most commonly accepted version if I'm not mistaken.

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 09:07:41 UTC from web
                    2. @tia I've already conceded that JC totally could have made a trip across the pond to America. And I'm pretty sure the part about not appearing until the second coming, he says that right before he leaves his disciples to ascend or whatever.

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 09:11:03 UTC from web
                      1. @rarity Well, I don't particularly feel like searching all the gospels, but Luke doesn't mention it. http://www.lds.org/scriptures/nt/luke/24.42

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 09:21:51 UTC from web
                        1. @tia I don't want to search all the gospels either, but this is from the Nicene Creed which is used ridiculously a lot in Christian liturgy, and claims within itself to be in accordance with scriptures. I don't know if Mormons have any use for the Nicene Creed, though, so this may literally not matter to you at all. "On the third day he rose again
                          in accordance with the Scriptures;
                          he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

                            1. @tia Can you at least see it as an indicator that there is probably something in the gospels about the point we're trying to prove, though?

                              2. @rarity Oh certainly I can and i do, though I and my faith's doctrines may disagree. For example, that God, the son, and the Holy Ghost are the same being goes contrary to many scriptures, but the creed decided they were the same.

                                          1. @rarity I know that what you're saying is a thing. I've heard it before, and I think verses saying something similar are in fact in the New Testament somewhere, yes. I can't agree on an interpretation that would make God contradict himself in my faith's canon though.

                                              1. @rarity He wouldn't have visited the Americas until after he'd ascended the first time to his father. He wouldn't let Mary touch him then, but he let the people in the Americas touch his wounds.

Lastly, I've never been too clear on the "rapture" element that other christian faiths propagate because I've never seen it described in actual scripture that way. What I have seen is that His second coming will be much like the time he visited immediately after his resurrection. There will be massive natural disasters, etc. many of the dead will raise from their graves and be resurrected, and it will come at a time when a very specific set of prophecies have all been fulfilled. The righteous will simply be preserved as far as I understand, not taken away. Maybe the rapture part comes in where the dead are raised. Those who are resurrected will be taken away as I understand, though I'd need to study more to be certain I'm correct.

                1. @tia @rarity And yes, like with the first time after his death, 3 days of darkness over the entire earth, and i think the moon will turn to blood (I presume in color), all at the second coming.

                      1. @rarity that rings a bell for me, but I can't say how it ties into the second coming without the verse. I gueeeess I could look it up myself x3

                        1. @tia the 3 hours piece is often regarded as apocrypha, for dramatic effect.

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 09:08:39 UTC from web
                          1. @rarity I googled it and it appears that while the Americas experienced 3 days' darkness, Jerusalem and other places may have experienced only 3 hours. Why the Americas got it worse there's no explanation. I guess they're just different that way for whatever reason.

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 09:16:34 UTC from web
                          2. @rarity So for that matter, since the second coming is supposed to be like after the crucifixion, some areas might have it worse than others. Though there are some pretty specific prophecies about the destruction that will occur, like a third of our population being wiped out.

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 09:18:03 UTC from web
                            1. @tia it's all fuzzy. because depending on what group "a third" of will lose, it could change things. Just to follow your thought process about Americas v Jerusalem, maybe it could mean a third of the entire world population, but the worst of the destruction occurs in America. Or something to that effect

Wednesday, 25-Dec-13 09:21:24 UTC from web

                                  1. @rarity It has a lot of focus on our continent. I think so too. There are various reasons like that this has been a promised land to Zion. Also, prophecies and our faith emphasize events around Jerusalem as well.
