@scoot OK! I saw a post about a guy claiming he was going to commit suicide (I don't know if it was real or not so I just wen't with my concern and read on) the people started out concerned making posts of equal concern then I saw people who were equally as depressed (Alleggedly) making posts talking about the best place to commit suicide, (now remember I ignored my thoughts in my head, or so I hope saying theses were just THOSE people who didn't know better and went on) and then there were more then the posts of suport equalled the post of hate and the other "support". it was rather confusing and just went on saying "These people exist they will say this stuff anyways where ever you go" but it got quiet depressing there was so much pessimism in their voices (or so it seems) But then people kept making jokes abiut it (again just THOSE type of people NOT 4chan exactly) I never saw people remark about the other... I thought that was interesting but that was one thread and I left.outoword
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 07:30:41 UTC from web-
@metaltao Doesn't sound much like 4chan to me, /mlp/ is worse than expected.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 07:32:50 UTC from web-
@scoot Yeah but THAT WAS ONE thread
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 07:33:11 UTC from web-
@metaltao Yeah but on other BOARDS that would have been ignored or people would have just called them bad names for attention seeking
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 07:33:36 UTC from web-
@scoot Or that was their honest opinion, there are a ot of people out there and so it would be expected that they would feel that way... they are everywhere... agians this is low sample size and so we don't know if it will represent the 4chan community as a whole. 4Chan has doen AMAZING things in the past like catching THOUSAND of paedophiles on the internet and leading police to arrest the said paedophiles....
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 07:35:50 UTC from web-
@metaltao Yeah but you seem to think of 4chan as an organised force, when in reality it's a huge message board filled with people with a VERY varied set of interests, all split up into communities.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 07:36:44 UTC from web-
@scoot I know it isn't I was simply stating 4chan as a whole to simplify things for conversation
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 07:37:40 UTC from web -
@scoot Bt anyways, 4chan's importance to the internet SHALL NOT be underestimated for it has created many of the BEST and teh WORST things we have t deal with now like this fandum :D
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 07:41:52 UTC from web-
@metaltao It's importance has been steadily declining in recent years. Tumblr is taking over as lead content creator and joke factory for a start. Its contributions to internet past are important, but now it is becoming irrelevant, all the good old users have left to join other sites
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 07:42:55 UTC from web-
@scoot Well, have you seen what they did to the book vote? they voted mein compfe to the #1 spot as best book ever! I don't know how to feel about that
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 07:44:25 UTC from web-
@metaltao They also voted the founder of 4chan as Time's man of the year one time and a lot of other stuff, that is very tame
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 07:45:34 UTC from web-
@scoot Yes I like tame... They also umm.... I can't think anything on the top of my head... head on over to know your meme.... incredible helpful bro

@metaltao They're organized, for sure. I like nothing that I've seen 4chan's anonymous (and moot) do.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 07:46:27 UTC from web-
@pony maybe not "for sure"
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 07:47:07 UTC from web -
@pony moot doesn't do anything and as for "organised" it's just that they all have the same damn sense of humour/morals. It's like saying a group of cats chasing a mouse are organised because they share a common goal.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 07:48:10 UTC from web-
@scoot I thought that after posting, yeah. moot enables them, essentially.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 07:49:47 UTC from web-
@pony He doesn't factor in at all, except that he maintains the website. He doesn't involve himself in anything 4chan actually does, nor does he ever post.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 07:50:54 UTC from web-
@scoot Who does the moderating there?
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 07:53:39 UTC from web-
@pony Anonymous janitors and mods
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 07:54:35 UTC from web -
@pony They hire moderators, who usually do very little visibly. They will delete any post involving CP though, it is pretty much the only thing mods are there to do.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 07:56:15 UTC from web-
@scoot If somebody asks for tips on how to commit homocide would they do anything?
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 07:57:31 UTC from web-
@pony Unsure, I've never seen them do it. If it breaks this rule then they will usually do something about it: "Do not upload, post, discuss, request, or link to, anything that violates local or United States law. This will be severely punished and strictly enforced."
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:00:36 UTC from web-
@scoot Except I've seen that hasn't always been enforced as in the case of cyber bullying.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:01:39 UTC from web-
@pony Well they vehemently delete CP posts because the FBI are on their backs and it's pretty much inexcusable on any website anyway, that's all I know. I've never really seen them delete anything else that was specifically /illegal/
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:02:59 UTC from web-
@scoot I guess they're interested in just getting away with whatever they can then, but it's obviously unethical to allow any crime.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:04:57 UTC from web-
@pony You're mistaking ignorance with willful enabling, though. The problem is their community is way too big to moderate effectively. Especially in places like /b/. I doubt anyone on staff there wants that kind of stuff to happen but it happens so often that they can't stop it all.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:07:19 UTC from web-
@redenchilada That's when you create new protocol that takes away anonymity. Neglect is tantamount to abuse in this case. If they can't handle the responsibility it should be taken from them by, I dunno, the government I guess.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:11:27 UTC from web-
@pony Removing anonymity would destroy 4chan's entire system and floods of users would leave
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:15:56 UTC from web-
@scoot Uess it would
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:16:26 UTC from web -
@scoot That is exactly what needs to happen unless they have the manpower to handle the anonymity.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:17:29 UTC from web-
@pony In your opinion. Nobody else wants 4chan to have more mods.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:18:39 UTC from web-
@scoot In my opinion Anontalk was better for being tightly moderated yet not cherry-picking which topics to restrict.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:22:12 UTC from web-
@pony OK but 4chan is a different beast and your attempts to "fix" it would ultimately destroy the site. Much like your ideas for RDN if I recall
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:23:32 UTC from web-
@scoot If the only way to be popular is to turn a blind eye to bad stuff, then I don't want to be popular. For the record, Anontalk was a terrible community imo.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:28:00 UTC from web-
@pony They aren't trying to be popular. They have never advertised their website and all of their userbase comes from word of mouth? All of your motives seem skewed and baseless

@redenchilada What I mean is that, if /I/ know that illegal activity goes on on 4chan without being restricted (and I don't go there), then moot and his mods must know about it. I don't see them as ignorant or unable to stop it, even if it means offending their user base.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:13:59 UTC from web-
@pony They obviously become aware of it after a time has passed and word has gotten around, but there's far too many posts and threads shifting back and forth at any given time for them to catch them in the act, and it's obvious that you aren't seeing that.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:16:20 UTC from web-
@nerthos Yet she's not the first victim nor was she the last. After the first instance they should have taken preemptive measures.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:18:30 UTC from web-
@pony I told you already that the name doesn't ring any bells.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:21:43 UTC from web-
@nerthos Do you recall the name of the victim involved in "Ya done goofed." ? I don't. Anyway Rebecca Black was the singer in Friday, a wildly unpopular viral song.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:25:32 UTC from web-
@pony It still don't see how that she made a song has anything to do with crime. And regarding the "ya done goofed" girl, she can't be considered a victim. If you're stupid enough to go into a site like the old 4chan and outright /challenge/ them to get you, you have literally no right to complain afterwards.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:28:11 UTC from web-
@nerthos Rebecca Black probably got a lot of hatemail, that is what he is referring to
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:29:36 UTC from web-
@scoot Is he honestly claiming 4chan should be closed over something like that? Haha
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:31:59 UTC from web-
@nerthos It should be shut down because it hasn't fixed itself, not because of a single instance of bullying.

@scoot @nerthos I'm mostly just thinking of anything mean that you can find on Google by searching: 4chan rebecca black
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:32:04 UTC from web-
@pony "Stop the 4chan meanies!" you are now embarrassing yourself, you should probably consider giving up
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:33:20 UTC from web-
@scoot Do I expect to make a difference? I'm not sure honestly. Will I sit quietly, not tonight it seems. http://media.moddb.com/images/downloads/1/57/56096/deal_with_it_flutter_style_by.jpg
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:36:26 UTC from web-
@pony Reiterate my previous statement, but with more emphasis.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:37:40 UTC from web-
@scoot Be grateful I have a enough intelligence to realize that giving up is dumb. You shouldn't do it when you're in the right. Or maybe some Scoots just like to watch the world burn. :P
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:44:47 UTC from web-
@pony I'm telling you to give up because you 1. Look unintelligent and are showing a clear lack of knowledge 2. Because the entire point is irrelevant and your opinion isn't going to change anything and 3. If you were trying to make a change you would be mailing moot and other important people instead of discussing it on RDN.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:46:34 UTC from web-
@scoot As surprising as it may be to you, I value what you think. I lift where I stand, so to speak. It would be less effective to mess with 4chan directly than it would be to try and convince people I actually know to some degree. I don't expect to convince you, but, beyond convincing, there's also coming to a better understanding of my own beliefs through discussion, which you've helped. And if there's anything you'd teach me, rather than insulting me, then cool.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:55:43 UTC from web-
@pony I wasn't insulting you in the first point, I was literally telling you how you have appeared with your entire argument so far, like somebody who has no idea what you're talking about.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:57:47 UTC from web-
@scoot The lack of any justification for your commentary on my appearance left me with the impression that you only meant to insult me. I never said you insulted me.

@nerthos Assisted suicide is murder. Both the girl and 4chan needed to be punished, essentially. I love freedom, but what I don't love is the ideology that argues people should have "rights" without responsibility.

@pony 4chan works like the following: There's 15 pages of threads, and threads are ordered chronologically by which thread had the latest reply. If any thread is kicked past the 15th page it is deleted automatically. Now go to a high-traffic board, look at what threads are on first page, then f5. You'll see that maybe only one or two of the threads you saw are still there. Now, in these circumstances, can you honestly say you would be able to check what's going on in every single thread all the time?
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:20:17 UTC from web-
@nerthos If they had the appropriate manpower maybe, but since they don't they should be forced to shut down in my opinion.
Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 08:24:28 UTC from web-
@pony Man, you're an amusing one. First off, you seem to hate freedom. Second, they would just create anoher site, with tighter security, and harder for the authorities to keep track of.

Wednesday, 04-Jun-14 07:56:28 UTC from web-
@redenchilada true. I just remember the time that /b/ set it's sights on mandopony. That should have been reported and stopped, and, failing that, it should have brought the site under scrutiny.
