        @redenchilada At the time I never think about it, and the art I'm mentioning are pieces that have already been done and I just adopt the characters.

          The ones I've actually commissioned don't have a use for transparent backgrounds, besides one and I kinda like the background anyway

              @beatstrings All I know is that she uses SAI and I think that she works on a single layer. Not 100% sure though because the only one I've personally watched her work on was a single layer.

                        @nerthos it doesn't always work out. It probably would here, but I don't even know if GIMP has a magnetic lasso. Does it? I've only used the regular one and sometimes layer masks.

                        @nerthos Yeah GIMP has its own version of it, but it's horrible. It was shaky as hell and couldn't stay on the outline worth a crap

                            @redenchilada that's what I usually use. It's just slow since I get really dole about making sure I don't take some of the background with it.
