irssi is good. Emacs has ERC which is good if you use emacs. There's Finch/pidgin if you want other messengers. Finally, there's XChat.

@omni weechat

@omni xchat is awesome

@lelamal @jankusanagi @duck1123 @ivaniraci @noahfecks @jla For some strange reason, Choqok only listed one of all those replies under "replies". Well, at any rate, thanks for the input. I'll consider all of them with the exception of Konversation as that is the one I'm using ATM and it's doing the same as KDE Plasma Active used to do for me when I still used it: demanding attention when there is nothing going on :P

@omni I like irssi

@quicoju I'm actually using it right now, it's a great client, yes. I'm just wondering if there is any way to get it to send native desktop notifications, though I suspect there would be a plugin for that somewhere

@omni You could probably write a plugin to have it call notify-send

@Omni, just saw your reply, probably you already have it, but here's the link anyway. http://ur1.ca/78ej

#weechat definitely :)

I use Pidgin or XChat.

irssi or xchat !linux

@kesara I've actually switched my recommendation to weechat on the grounds that irssi development appears to have been dead for two years now whereas weechat is very active and even more powerful than irssi is.
