@mcnalu actually, no. any fluid makes the fibers swell, and the sanding after the first application of the stain is precisely to remove the effect of that. I've used a dry spell to do my sanding now, and I'm force-drying now (the shelves still felt somewhat sticky) before applying the second 'coat' of stain.

@mk I was half-joking, but you're right, I only used wet and dry paper for prepping very smooth car metal work.
