hmm, it seems I may have to do the install all over again after using GParted to explicitly create an MBR partition table instead of GPT - thought I had that, and only removed existing partitions :( So, on to installation take 4! Damn M$ and its UEFI !grrr #Mint

@mk nope - it actually was MBR already; flagged sda1 as "boot" and now running installation again... :( #Mint

@mk this time (with partition flagged as 'boot' and specified Grub to be installed in /dev/sda1 instead of the MBR (/dev/sda) installation finished! And there is a grub.cfg file which wasn't there after the last attempt. So, I'll try booting from the hard disk now... #Mint #crossersfinged

@mk 'Welcome to GRUB! error: file... not found' grub rescue> (blink blink). So, we're one step further. Let's finish dinner first! :( #Mint

@mk interesting... grub seems to look for a file in /grub2 but /brub2 doesn't exist, while that file does exist in /boot/grub. Does Grub understand symlinks? Or do I need to edit the grub config? #Mint !grrr #grubgrumble
