@awlditzy I've always had a thing for the chants of the Roman Catholic Church but this is great too

@rarity I got into Gregorian Chant when I was studying Orthodoxy, started out with Russian and Slavonic chants. Many of these services I have a degree of familiarity with.
Sunday, 02-Nov-14 00:44:03 UTC from web-
@awlditzy I got into it because I'm a big medieval nerd
Sunday, 02-Nov-14 00:44:44 UTC from web-
@rarity Yes, I am sure that this translation I linked was written before the Crusades, difficult to say as the Byzantine Empire was very lax on using Greek in areas excepting liturgy.
Sunday, 02-Nov-14 00:46:40 UTC from web-
@awlditzy I say medieval vaguely because I know that the hymns come from hundreds and hundreds of years of church history
Sunday, 02-Nov-14 00:48:14 UTC from web-
@rarity That they do. Unfortunately I'm only familiar with "Salve Regina" and Ave Maria (if that counts) in western chants.
Sunday, 02-Nov-14 00:54:17 UTC from web-
@awlditzy I'd never counted those as chants but I guess they can count
Sunday, 02-Nov-14 00:54:39 UTC from web-
@rarity I just remember hearing Ave Maria sung. It is a prayer, though, is it not?
Sunday, 02-Nov-14 00:55:18 UTC from web-
@awlditzy well, technically. I mean it literally means "Hail Mary", but the modern musical version is actually from an opera. It's still religious though
Sunday, 02-Nov-14 00:57:45 UTC from web-
@rarity Oh, so likely what I heard wasn't the actual prayer.
Sunday, 02-Nov-14 00:58:27 UTC from web-
@awlditzy "The opening words and refrain of Ellen's song, namely "Ave Maria" (Latin, "Hail Mary"), may have led to the idea of adapting Schubert's melody as a setting for the full text of the traditional Roman Catholic prayer Ave Maria. The Latin version of the Ave Maria is now so frequently used with Schubert's melody, that it has led to the misconception that he originally wrote the melody as a setting for the Ave Maria." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xExJRwDM1H4

@rarity This is one hell of a beautiful song! Fortified with Iron-y!

@awlditzy so you've probably heard both versions
Sunday, 02-Nov-14 00:59:40 UTC from web-
@rarity Yup, both versions. I like Schubert's melody to it the most. Schubert was one of those under appreciated composers, although a recognisable name.

@awlditzy Actually there's a prayer called Ave María, together with the Pater Nostrem the two most common prayers in catolicism; and there's also a song/chant called Ave María too.
Sunday, 02-Nov-14 01:00:19 UTC from web-
@nerthos Oh I know Pater Nostrem, Otse Nash, also known as The Lord's Prayer in English.
