Sounds surprisingly like a lot of Tuvan and Mongolian music I've heard. Chuvash are barely related to either, and their land is barely east of what most know as European Russia. http://rainbowdash.net/url/813809

@saintnichawlas I will bookmark this and check it out when this record I'm listening to finishes
-
@northernnarwhal No need; I just don't have anyone else to share things with lo
-
@saintnichawlas No no no, I want to check it out. I'm ALWAYS open to new music. I just don't want to interrupt this record.
-
@saintnichawlas Record is done, checking out this piece now
-
@northernnarwhal Don't know why it surprised me being so much like the sort of music from Siberian lands as their languages are somewhat similar.
-
@saintnichawlas I admittedly don't know an awful lot about the music of that region but as a fan of traditional folk music I enjoyed the song you posted.
-
@northernnarwhal You want to know about any of it just ask.
-
@saintnichawlas Well, what I find so interesting about it is that there's a very strong sense of harmony and melody that you'd normally find in more traditional European music but there are eclectic polyrhythms from the rhythm instruments which you'd likely see in traditional African and to some extent Greek music, so it's really its own beast of styles that developed on its own and that's just really neat.
-
@northernnarwhal I expected it to have that sort of Russian cultural pop feel to it as Chuvashia is a subjugate... but didn't expect it at the same time to sound so Turkic.
-
@saintnichawlas The harmonies are quite fascinating as well, there are a lot of instruments performing lots of parts here. There's a lot to digest.
-
@northernnarwhal have you ever listened to Pelican?
-
@derpy128 Yes, I have listened to Pelican, they're great. I'm a massive fan of all sorts of post and sludge metal. Semi-related, I'm actually currently listening to early Cult of Luna stuff right now. http://rainbowdash.net/attachment/813812
-
@northernnarwhal why did you post that name on an MLP site? No one will take it seriously now! On a Russian note, and speaking of Sludge, Jucifer is so boss.
-
@northernnarwhal There's a certain amount of hilarity in talking about a band named "Cult of Luna" on an MLP fansite
-
@redenchilada that's what I literally just said.
-
@derpy128 Sadly you're right, kickass band though. Vertikal was one of my favourite albums of last year. Also, on the topic of sludge, Isis (hurr durr terrorist joke) are one of my favourite bands ever and Aaron Turner is an artistic mastermind. Especially Panopticon, god damn that album is fantastic.
-
@derpy128 Well shush you, I didn't see your post >:C
-
@northernnarwhal too bad i can't understand Chuvash worth a lick.
-
@redenchilada >tfw fans of a children's cartoon trivialize art
-
@northernnarwhal cool I'll look them up. >tfw my stepdad opened for Jucifer.
-
@northernnarwhal I'm going to tell every brony I encounter about this band now just for giggles
-
@saintnichawlas Neither, melodies are very soft and sweet though. They could be going on about genocide and I'd be singing along lo
-
@redenchilada It's sad because they're actually a really good band who have been together making music for well over a decade and are one of the most respected names in their respective genre.
-
@redenchilada "BREAKING NEWS: CULT OF LUNA BAND SALES REACH INEXPLICABLE HIGH AFTER NEWS BROKE OF IT ON A RAINBOW HORSE SITE."
-
@northernnarwhal I was going to say that! :(
-
@northernnarwhal If it's any consolation I don't think there are seriously that many people who know about them and only do so because of some hilarious coincidence with a fandom
-
@derpy128 I wish, knowing the demographic and artistic merit of most brony music I imagine a band like Cult of Luna would fly over most of their heads.
-
@redenchilada It's not even like MLP FIM invented the name Luna either.
-
@northernnarwhal Well duh. It's like how everyone knows the word "sonic" wasn't invented by Sega but I still think of blue hedgehogs running fast every time I hear the word. It's just a silly little correlation, 'sall
-
@northernnarwhal lol that is true. I like a lot of brony music, but it's sti not even close to the caliber of real music. It's kind of sad that people waste their talent like that...
-
@northernnarwhal well they aren't that turkish...
Narwhal likes this. -
@derpy128 It's not that it's not "real" music, it's just very shallow in its artistic depth. Created and marketed with the intention of having transient entertainment value and being completely disposable.
-
@northernnarwhal yeah, I just said real music to distinguish it from non-brony music, and think you are absolutely right.
-
@northernnarwhal It's not like you can really expect much from music written about a cartoon, though. A lot of the better talents in the fandom eventually move on to non-pony music, though, which is nice.
-
@redenchilada For sure. Funny enough, these days when I hear Luna I usually first think of either the band Cult of Luna or the character from Virtue's Last Reward.
-
@saintnichawlas Well played you clever sod
-
@redenchilada Same principle with the artists and animators too, I've noticed.
-
@redenchilada like living tombstone. And my friend.
-
@northernnarwhal A lot of the better ones there were decently-known even before they got into ponies though.
-
@redenchilada To be fair as well I think Daniel Ingram did a solid job in his compositions from the show, ESPECIALLY This Day Aria.
-
@northernnarwhal I LOVE THIS DAY ARIA!!!!
-
@northernnarwhal The showtunes are pretty much perf yeah
-
@redenchilada @derpy128 I sort of talk about why I love that piece in particular so much, specifically how it's composition is very clever. http://rainbowdash.net/notice/3724470
-
@northernnarwhal So basically the entire song was an elaborate pun
-
@redenchilada Give or take, yeah. A giant, complicated musical pun.
-
@northernnarwhal also the use of false notes...
-
@derpy128 It was very well written and performed for a children's television cartoon. Like, classic Disney music level good.
