  1. TFW Rave house is all the same with different patterns. the sound design is literally non-existent. how disappointing. Why cant electronic artists stop playing it safe and make some weird papaya!?

      1. @metaltao He's pretty good, I feel like he still needs to develop his style a bit but he has some good ideas so I will follow him as he puts out more material.

        1. @northernnarwhal I really like what he does have so far, I found the Song Easy to be incredibly chill and amazing to listen to in the dark. Nice to think to, meditation really. Soothing.

          1. @metaltao I found the whole first half of Lanterns to be quite enjoyable, and Sisyphus was a pretty unique record (though admittedly I only checked that out because of Sufjan Stevens)

        2. @northernnarwhal There is more to music then sticking to a specific style, i found the track quite well designed.

          1. @l1ghtsword It's not that he's sticking to a style as much as he's drawing influence from a lot of idioms within the genre without giving his records a sense of idiosyncrasy. He's not bad, I do /like/ his music I sould just like to see him develop more as far as his personal sound goes.

            2. @northernnarwhal I suppose i have a different way of viewing sound.

              1. @l1ghtsword Just the way I view music

Tuesday, 30-Dec-14 02:50:28 UTC from MuSTArDroid
                1. @northernnarwhal I try to look at everything on a sound design level. even non-electronic music. I don't LIKE every genre but i can still appreciate different sound for what it is despite that.

Tuesday, 30-Dec-14 02:52:05 UTC from web
                  1. @l1ghtsword Well, I look at that too, but I try to look at the bigger picture too. I think engineering is important but good songwriting is also important for justifying an artist's ambitions.

                      1. @l1ghtsword I guess it's just what we both look for in our music. It's cool though, whatever works for the listener, right? If you like it that's all tbat matters (though for the record I actually liked the track Metal posted, I was jist commenting on the artist)

                        1. @northernnarwhal i get that, i just like having discussions on musical concepts. those topics are rare for me. i live in a very uncultured area...

                          1. @l1ghtsword Yeah, I guess Toronto (or by extension the GTA) has more music culture.

                    2. @northernnarwhal I care about music theory but it shouldn't be a dead set/ required rule. that takes the freedom of creativity away from the artist. at its raw sound anything can be unique or creative even if misunderstood. look at early forms of dubstep for example.

                      1. @l1ghtsword Dude, you're preaching to the damn choir. Have you even HEARD my electronic album of the year?

                        1. @northernnarwhal I didn't get the chance unfortunately. Holidays are retail Hell

                          1. @l1ghtsword Oh my god I know ;~; I send my deepest regards to anyone working retail, I've experienced retail during holidays and it's the worst.

                            1. @northernnarwhal Its chilled out now, i am finally going back and listening to largely compiled lists of music i hadn't listened too yet. tbh i had a rut in which i just didnt want to listen to music. so much watered down papayas/ no time to work on my own sound

Tuesday, 30-Dec-14 03:11:53 UTC from web
                              1. @l1ghtsword I get that, I really need to work on more of my grapes. I've mostly been doing covers lately.

Tuesday, 30-Dec-14 03:13:05 UTC from web
                          2. @l1ghtsword When I say composition I don't at all mean theory. While theory does help, I use composition by its more literal definition in the sense of how the song is put together. Like, the arrangement and structure of it, really. The songwriting too.

Tuesday, 30-Dec-14 03:11:44 UTC from web
                            1. @northernnarwhal oh i just call that the arrangment. composition/ production is the entire process

Tuesday, 30-Dec-14 03:12:37 UTC from web
                              1. @l1ghtsword Well, I think arrangement is only part of composition but composition as a whole is arrangement + songwriting + structure

Tuesday, 30-Dec-14 03:14:22 UTC from web
                                1. @northernnarwhal i would argue arrangement and structure are the same thing

Tuesday, 30-Dec-14 03:15:08 UTC from web
                                  1. @l1ghtsword Structure is more how the song is organized but arrangement also refers to the instruments and sounds used

Tuesday, 30-Dec-14 03:16:21 UTC from web
                                    1. @northernnarwhal i really dont think that's correct. iv always known arrangment to be the term which describes both of what was just mentioned.

Tuesday, 30-Dec-14 03:17:42 UTC from web
                                      1. @l1ghtsword Arrangement can include structure depending on how you define it though it is more than structure. Like rectangles and squares.

Tuesday, 30-Dec-14 03:18:50 UTC from web
                                        1. @northernnarwhal Is this actual text book theory or your own definition?

Tuesday, 30-Dec-14 03:19:25 UTC from web
                                          1. @l1ghtsword Text book, or at least how I learned.

Tuesday, 30-Dec-14 03:19:57 UTC from web
                                            1. @northernnarwhal books are dumb, but that would explain it. i learned terms and concepts on the fly along with sound design and other aspects of production. iv never been good with terms tbh.

Tuesday, 30-Dec-14 03:21:02 UTC from web
                                              1. @l1ghtsword I get that, it's totally fine. As long as you understand what I'm talking about, you don't need formal music education in my opinion.

Tuesday, 30-Dec-14 03:23:22 UTC from web
                                                1. @northernnarwhal i agree, i know what you mean now however. I certainly wouldnt say that i follow theory to the letter but i do use it often unknowingly. Its goes hand and hand with most music.

Tuesday, 30-Dec-14 03:24:50 UTC from web
                                                  1. @l1ghtsword Yeah, I don't follow theory much either. I have a general knowledge to play chords and stuff but a lot of my songs come together via improvisation.

Tuesday, 30-Dec-14 03:34:34 UTC from web
      2. @metaltao I really enjoy the harmonic range of the track. the spectrum is very full and rich. Its a very well designed track.
