Cupcakes was fairly mild, for a grimdark. I know that seems impossible, but when you've been to every dark, shady corner (including Sethisto's own Equestria After Dark), you realize that Cupcakes is just plain boring.

@nvrrmbr Apparently lots of people aren't exposed to this kind of thing despite being online. Rather odd, but okay.
-
@nvrrmbr When this is the majority of the music you listen to, Cupcakes is freaking nothing: http://tinyurl.com/icumblud
-
@ponybis Just being on the internet doesn't immediately make you a twisted deviant. That's something that has to be sought out.
-
@acceleratinguniverse Dude. NSFW tag that sort of thing. That was freaking disgusting.
-
@starshine If you're past the 2.0 barrier you generally are. Prove me wrong.
-
@acceleratinguniverse Yeah, I've already passed by that. I am listening to Singularity, an independent album that has caused my friend's ears to literaly bleed.
-
@starshine Er, I thought the way I introduced would be adequate.
-
@ponybis You're the one who made the original statement, so the burden of proof is on you.
-
@starshine The proof is around you ;-)
-
@ponybis I disagree
-
@acceleratinguniverse I love Death Metal, but this is why I don't listen to Cannibal Corpse.
-
@starshine The pony culture is a bit... different, frum the rest of the underground internet, because a lot of people here were never exposed to websites outside of the mainstream. Go on a Boxxy fansite, or a chan that isn't Ponychan, or a forum about something not generally popular, and the majority of the people will be at least tolerant of incredibly "disgusting" stuff, if not entertained by it.
-
well, ima go to bed. Good Night everypony :)
-
@yatta Goodnight~
-
@acceleratinguniverse Welcome to our little hugbox. Just remember to tag as NSFW and you should be fine.
-
@yatta night bro
-
@yatta Good night! :D
-
@yatta Later yatta! :D
-
@acceleratinguniverse I know this. The 4chan universe is full of disgusting people. I'm disagreeing with @ponybis's assertion that every "2.0" site is like that.
-
@yatta night sleep well brony
-
@starshine What I meant was pretty much everything past mainstream and social networking sites like Youtube and Facebook. The twistedness may vary and change, but there's an aspect of it in every net community outside of and in those sites.
-
@ponybis Those very sites are essentially the definition of "web 2.0". By using that specific term you're explicitly bringing those sites into the discussion, not excluding them.
-
@starshine I'm going by more of a web-slang definition rather than a literal, but then perhaps I could pull up things like Usenet and IRC networks.
-
@ponybis Which is not at all what you said originally. You're backpedaling.
-
@starshine Regardless, the point stands as I feel most people with a longer-internet exposure generally stumble upon grimdark things. This is a silly argument.
-
@ponybis Been online since 1997... oh the horror stories I could tell
-
@ponybis in regards to the comment I agree. anyone who use the internet will stumble across a little taste of everything that it has to offer.
-
@ponybis Silly, yes, because it basically comes down to "most people I associate with online are disturbed" versus "most people I associate with online are not". I don't want to draw hasty conclusions, but I would imagine that you tend to be introduced to one site via another you already visit, and if you start off with some place like 4chan then of course you'll wander off into some pretty dark corners.
-
@ponybis I wouldn't say grimdark, more so cynical. At least, that is my experience - when I got into the Internet initially, I was exposed to the more political and philosophical side of life. A little exposure is all it takes really to make a kid cynical; I couldn't tell you how I was prior to a certain part of the Internet I commoned, but I can certainly tell you that it made me cynical to a T.
-
@starshine I started the internet with GameFAQs. :p Also convinced to watch pony through IRC friend, eventually loved it, googled pony imageboard, found ponychan link page, found all these places.
-
@ponybis Also: "stumbling" on it and actually *liking* it are totally separate things. In the ~15 years that I've been online I have seen a heck of a lot of disturbing things, but that doesn't mean I seek them out or even like them. Gore porn and the like still disgusts me.
-
@ponybis Sorry, don't know anything about GameFAQs, so I can't really extrapolate anything from that.
-
@starshine I didn't say liking, but there seems to be a bit of an overreaction to cupcakes and the like. Especially with banter concerning people NOT TO READ IT OMG. And people stating it's the pinnacle of grimdark, whilst it is clearly not. Thanks to more friendly sites like KYM introducing people to the series and even having their own OMG CUPCAKES IS HORRIBLE page it has led a lot of unhardened people to read it and post in disgust and if anyone considers reading it they'll jump on them and boast about how terrible it is. And if someone is interested based on that they're in for a little disappointment because it gets over-exaggerated.
-
@ponybis Well, in this particular community, considering that there are some really young fans who really haven't had any exposure to anything remotely like that - and really *shouldn't* because they're frankly not mentally ready for it. But even for those who wouldn't be Scarred For Life or whatever, I still wouldn't recommend reading Cupcakes, just because it honestly doesn't have any redeeming qualities aside from being totally over-the-top disgusting. It's something that people make occasional references to, and you don't need to read it in order to get those references. It's really not remarkable writing.
-
@starshine I liked it for the plot. Also, been interneting since I was like 12. And I'm still not mentally ready, according to most people, to view most of the things I've witnessed (Still a minor). Not sure if this is good.
-
@ponybis I believe that is what is called 'innocence'. I've learned that it merely takes time to be corrupted, so just wait a couple years.
-
@ponybis I know that feeling. I've been on the internet since I was 11. Began roleplaying at 12, first physical relations rp that same year...Still a minor for another year and a few months.
-
@ickus Are you asserting I still have my innocence? How joyous.
-
@ponybis I have little idea, really. I lost my innocence long ago - I don't remember what it's like to have it, honestly.
-
@ickus It's simply ignorance, but there is an honest reason the phrase "Ignorance is bliss" exists. The world seemed like a much nicer place before I began actually learning how things really worked.
-
@doctorwhooffanatic never role played and been online for about 7 years
-
@ickus Considering this, is it a bad thing that I lost all innocence around roughly 11?
-
@ponybis I think you're slightly mentally disturbed, but that's just me ;) I was about 12 when I first got on the internet too, but that was years ago and I swear it was a lot tamer back then. I think it was smarter too... a lot of "pre-web-2.0" forums seemed to have more in the way of civil discussions instead of a bunch of racist slurs and ad hominem attacks. (Now I feel old)
-
@ickus Man the party hasn't ended is long. Oh well more material.
-
@ickus Yes.
-
@ickus I have mixed thoughts on the matter. Do you value steps towards a successful and knowledge-filled life or a life of not-knowing-much, but being happy with yourself.
-
@ponybis The world is a cold, cruel place. Civilization is there to make it just a bit brighter, but you'll learn with age that nothing is like those TV shows you watched as a child. Why am I telling the MLP community this? I have a feeling I'm going to be shot with intense friendship beams for attempting cynical thought.
-
@ponybis I find the ending to that rather one-sided. Does one have to be ignorant to be happy?
-
@starshine I am a bit disturbed, but I do stand by my perceptions of people online. I sort of study behavior of individuals and groups online. Not formally, but for my own interests and entertainment.
-
@ponybis I've studied it formally. :)
-
@ickus cynical? jsut honest more then anything
-
@vulcan539 True.
-
@vulcan539 I love to roleplay, it lets me do things I could never do in the real world! Like be a pony! ^^
-
@ickus No, that is not what I intended to imply. But you may feel that way and if you do you simply do. I don't have final thoughts on the matter, it's kind of up there for me.
-
@ickus No. I have seen a lot of stuff in my life that I'd rather not have seen. Large doses of pony, I find, acts almost like brain bleach.
-
@starshine Some sort of psychology course? I'm sort of interested. If you say it was for a report, essay, or article I'm going to be sad, though.
-
@starshine brain bleach, I agree. its like a oasis in the chaos that the world troughs at us.
-
@ponybis I'm inclined to disagree with the statement, hoenstly. It seems to me that knowledge is being attritubed far too much lately to miserable life-styles.
-
@ickus *target aquired* Roger that we are a go for friendship lasers.
-
@vulcan539 Careful with your language here.
-
@ponybis apologies
-
@madflavors I built those for you, Celestia, and I can disassemble them! I inquire that you cease and desist at once!
-
@ickus That's from over-egotistic and pseudo-intellectuals individuals experiencing the lovely human angst. I'm not setting anything I said in stone, I'm saying I'm not really sure where I stand on the matter. I only get the chance to experience one life (as far as I'm aware) and I can't really compare it to any others.
-
@ponybis I don't really want to discuss it in detail here, but it was research on various aspects of internet communication that resulted in a 15ish-page paper.
-
@starshine Sounds fun.
-
@ickus "inquire" means to question. Did you mean, "Demand"?
-
@ickus You need cheering up! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Fk8SOGBEow&NR=1
-
@ponybis I apologize for the typos - I seem to be a bit drowsy at the moment, but I'll keep on a look out. As well, I see; I do insist you look into the matter though. Knowledge is a most interesting tool.
-
@administrator Possibly "implore"?
-
@administrator But mad'am, if I were to 'demand' the Princess to halt, that would only enrage, or worse yet, provoke her!
-
@ickus the target has gone hostile repeat target has gone hostile begin charging sequence and move to attack formation bingo.
-
@ponybis It was fun for the first six weeks, but it started getting to my head. I wish I'd found MLP earlier on, I could have worked it into the essay and made it somewhat less depressing. Tangentially: amzn.com/0674050894
-
@starshine Ah, is your paper featured in this book? I kind of want to read this now regardless.
-
@ickus I'm a "Sir".
-
@ponybis Oh, lol no. That book was one of my sources, and probably the most relevant one to this discussion.
