@awlditzy Who's that?

@northernnarwhal He was the last living speaker of Ubykh, a now dead language. His people emigrated to Turkey when the Russian Empire invaded their lands. The Ubykhs are related to Abkhaz.

@awlditzy Is it dead in the way that Latin is dead where people still know and study it or dead as in all accounts of it are lost?

@northernnarwhal Actually because of Zolak one account of it does exist. He had many conversations with an Abkhaz linguist who came to visit him and hear his claim of being the last of his peoples. Their language wasn't ever written and a lot of their culture would have been lost of all account if not for him.

@awlditzy Wow, that's really amazing of that linguist. He just saved a piece of culture.

@northernnarwhal Zolak's story is pretty sad too. He spent decades not being able to converse with other Caucasians. He jumped at the chance to talk about it. Actually there's a book if you're interested.

@awlditzy I might look into it if I have time, I do have his name written down for the future.
