Woah world gen is looking a bit different now. It *has* been about two years since I last played. #DwarfFortress

@toksyuryel I only recently (like, a month back) played for the first time. Has world gen always taken so damn long?

@toksyuryel I mean, I can understand it taking that long, since it literally generates an entire history, but it's still a ridiculously long process, and I was wondering if it always has been.

@bitshift It has gotten much slower. I used to be able to generate a full 1050 year world in under an hour on a much worse CPU than what I have now. On that same CPU the current version would take at least a day to generate the same amount of history. One big problem with the game's performance remains that it is not threaded at all. I remember hearing something about some work on implementing threaded pathfinding a while back but I don't know how that ended up going.

@toksyuryel That's 1050 years on a very large world, I should add.

@toksyuryel Well, I guess it would have to, if no major optimisation has taken place, since I gather Toady has drastically increased the number of things that are simulated? It is certainly rather fun to look through the pre-generated history, though. There's some really odd stuff in there at times. :)

@bitshift Yeah, there's been a lot of stuff added to worldgen and Toady only optimizes stuff when he personally can no longer stand how slow it's become. He prefers to add new features and only fixes bugs when they bother him enough. This has changed recently as he's adopted a new development style where he spends some time after each major release fixing a bunch of bugs, but worldgen being slow isn't really a "bug" so it slips through the cracks most of the time.

@toksyuryel I think my favourite "this simulation seems overcomplex" bug (I've been following the development on/off since before I actually played) was when children would die of embarassment because they couldn't find suitably-sized clothes before they grew older and had to look for a larger size, and this repeated until death.

@bitshift *giggles* yeah there've been lots of wacky bugs over the years ☺ my favorite is still the lava rain from when DF2010 was first released. Before that there was always the classic carp bug and cat bug.
