*hugs @pony* I can't help but notice that you aren't on AIM right now :P

@toksyuryel I've been avoiding social distractions in my effort to prepare for reformatting.
-
@pony Reformatting what?
-
@toksyuryel My desktop machine. I'm considering setting up a dual boot system with XP and some form of linux.
-
@toksyuryel having trouble connecting to AIM again xP
-
@pony >XP
-
@pony Linux is fun :D I'll see what I can do to help you with it^^
-
@redenchilada @toksyuryel I'm certainly appreciative of any advice or help you might like to offer. I would simply create a VM for XP, but I've seen how that affects performance. Any suggestions for type of Linux? I'm really only familiar with Ubuntu, though I've used others at school.
-
@pony D: *hugs*
-
@toksyuryel !huggles keeps saying unable to connect. :/
Toksyuryel likes this. -
@pony It depends on what you want, what your patience level is, and what your preferred brand and flavor of soda is.
-
@pony Strange because it's working fine here =/ maybe some sort of problem between you and the server…
-
@toksyuryel I'd like speedy and smooth Youtube performance and online in-browser gaming, chat ability, and smooth handling of diverse video formats. My graphics card is just something basic unfortunately, so I know it won't be perfect. I'd just like soemthing that out-performs WinXP
-
@toksyuryel It happens often. I think it's due to the fact that I run AIM on 2 computers at once and often forget to stop one before starting the other. I'm not really sure though
-
@pony I don't think that's it because I can't see you online, unless you are invisible.
-
@toksyuryel I'd also like the ability to rotate between wallpaper if possible.. for patience level I'm flexible, but nothing hardcore I guess
-
@pony You can get that from any distro. I meant what do you want from it in terms of usability. Do you want it to simply work, do you want some level of control over what gets installed, do you like coke or pepsi, etc.
-
@toksyuryel Yeah. my other client is completely shut off.. I don't know what's going on with it.
-
@pony Have you tried powercycling your router and modem? That's a common way to fix unexplained network issues.
-
@toksyuryel I thought that all types of Linux gave you control over what's installed. How do they differ? I like cream soda!
-
@pony .... *has a 2L bottle of cream soda beside me* *brohoof*
-
@minti what did I just hear? :D
-
@toksyuryel I'm connected to my university's router wirelessly so I have no control over it. I wouldn't be surprised if their router or firewall is what's giving me problems
-
@minti aw yeeah! *brohoof* /)*(\
-
@pony They all give you control but different distros give you control in different ways and some make it very difficult to exercise that control. Ubuntu is a prime example of a distro that really don't want you messing with it. On the other end of the spectrum, Gentoo forces you to mess with it thoroughly. Generally speaking, the more control a distro gives you the more work it is to set up and maintain.
-
@pony That does sound likely. Perhaps you should look into proxies?
-
@toksyuryel I'm paranoid about using proxies honestly. I'm on my laptop now which I usually only use at work. My desktop connects to AIM fine usually (it's got a wired connection). Right now I'm backing stuff up on it though. Sometimes I'll call IT and work it out I guess.
-
@toksyuryel hmm.. Maybe something like Ubuntu is good for me.
-
@pony If you're going to use proxies you should of course only use trusted ones like Tor. It is good to be paranoid about them because most of them are just there to infect your system.
-
@toksyuryel unless of course I could improve my machine's performance with greater control?
-
@toksyuryel yeah. I think I might try Tor. I've never set up Pidgin or any chat client to work with Tor before though. I've just surfed with it. Does it affect the speed of messaging very much?
-
@pony Greater control gives you the potential for greater performance, yes. But again, you have to put more work into it just to set it up. It also tends to involve knowledge that you only get from experience with having experimented with such control. Thankfully I can help you with that. ☺
-
@pony I have never used a proxy before. I can connect you to a friend of mine who uses Tor constantly though and he could help you out.
-
@toksyuryel I'll let you know if I need any help with it. thanks!
-
@toksyuryel hmm.. how about something with a little more control than Ubuntu? I'd like to stretch myself a little, but I still don't have much patience.
-
@pony You probably want just straight-up Debian then. That's a decent mix of control and stuff that's already been done for you.
-
@toksyuryel Debian does sound good. I've heard many good things about it. Thanks!
-
@pony The main problem is it's got probably one of the worst communities of users out there. Don't expect to get too much out of them without being viciously insulted for asking them for help.
-
@toksyuryel ack! Well.. I got by just fine without asking help for Ubuntu.. maybe with you here for support it won't be too bad.
-
@pony I can't give too much support for Debian, I only used it for two weeks before I became unable to stand it. But I'll do what I can.
-
@pony Also consider Linux Mint Debian Edition. It's still Debian under the surface, but with more stuff already set up (such as questionably free codecs, which Debian's policy forbids shipping with).
-
@pony (That's free as in -dom, not as in price. They're indisputably zero-cost.)
-
@bitshift Mmm mint.
-
@toksyuryel @bitshift I'll keep that in mind. I'll look into it Debian and Mint Debian. Right now I'm gonna go get some foods
