Curiously, trying to troubleshoot Darktable's grumbles about not being able to find the 'fglrx' module (though starting and working just fine), I finally found the cause of getting a 'hang' (black screen)if I boot with the latest (or even recent) kernels. BOTH problems seem to go back to an incompatibility between 'fglrx' (which is the ATI/AMD driver for my graphics card) and XORG (and/or the latest Debian kernels). --- I'll leave that be until I have actually got a new RAID station and (maybe...) do a fresh install of Debian. Essentially, this all goes back to when my NVIDIA card failed (under warranty) and that model no longer existed, so they gave me an equivalent ATI replacement card. !grrr!

@mk ... and maybe I should be looking for not only a RAID station but also an NVIDIA card?
