  1. I'm worried that working with and being around so much analog equipment at school is actually starting to spoil all my digital music

    1. @northernnarwhal Hell, as long as it doesn't spoil your passion for music.

      1. @tawla I don't think anything will ever possibly be able to ruin music for me, it's just that now going and listening to music on a platform like Youtube or Spotify is more difficult because I can notice more of the inherent quality issues with their digital audio formatting.

        1. @northernnarwhal Oh I mis-understood.

          1. @stawllion I guess the best analogy I can give is when you see a film and know that lots of what is going is scientifically impossible you can generally still ignore it, but if you have a trained background in something like physics that stuff tends to stick out way more because you have a greater intrinsic understanding of the mechanics behind everything going on onscreen, so even though you know it's just a film and it doesn't have to be physically accurate you can't help but notice every time it is physically inaccurate.

              1. @mushi I'm glad I'm not a trained scientist and that I'm generally still able to maintain my suspension of disbelief while watching films, though usually I try to focus on the writing and directing more anyway so as long as I'm engaged by those I don't mind if the scene is totally implausible.

                1. @northernnarwhal yeah, i know those movies arent meant to be realist but some things they say are just too horrible

                  1. @mushi That's why I actually prefer when movies don't go out of their way to explain their science to me, because then I can just assume whatever is happening is a facet of the laws of physics within that film's universe.

            2. @northernnarwhal Oooh nice analogy actually. I think most people get those moments.

              1. @stawllion Yeah, thankfully on the other hand it's given me a greater appreciation for a lot of stuff too, having "trained ear" (using that term loosely here) means I can get a lot of enjoyment out of just hearing something that's been well engineered. It's certainly reminded me why I've gotten so into vinyl records too, specifically for analog recorded albums (since there generally isn't actually much of a difference between vinyl and high quality digital if the music itself was recorded, mixed, and mastered on digital).
