I don't think PPP is even the most bigoted depiction in S-Class, let alone the whole show, what with Superalloy Darkshine
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 18:56:45 UTC from web-
@tiffany Something I like about that show is that they go all out with the ridiculous things, without worrying if someone won't like it.
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 18:58:54 UTC from web-
@nerthos they don't worry because Japan is intrinsically sexist, racist and homophobic
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:00:31 UTC from web-
@tiffany Japan has bigger issues than that, like for example the crushing expectations put into everyone that drive so many to suicide. But it's also an incredibly respectful country where no one's going to rant to you because they don't like how you think or what you say, unless you're doing something illegal.
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:02:25 UTC from web-
@nerthos Very counterproductive when free reign spawns very real bigotry. Also just because some issues are worse than others doesn't mean they can't work on both
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:07:30 UTC from web-
@tiffany Honestly I'd just like people to stop going from "everything is funny" to "everything is offensive" every few decades and find a mid point.
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:11:41 UTC from web-
@nerthos Discussing and addressing the problems in media is how we find the mid point
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:14:59 UTC from web-
@tiffany But I see that people try too hard to completely obliterate anything offensive rather than separate it on tiers and allocate those tiers.
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:18:37 UTC from web-
@nerthos And I disagree with that too, but just because I disagree with those people's methods doesn't mean I'm going to spitefully do the opposite
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:20:05 UTC from web-
@tiffany I'm not spitefully opposing anything. I just want everyone to chill and let others enjoy what they like to watch. I hate shows like regular show, ren and stimpy, and basically anything that's gross, yet rarely complain in depth about them unless asked. We'll all hate things others enjoy.
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:24:14 UTC from web-
@nerthos You can enjoy whatever you want, absolutely, but it's still important to accept that there are problematic elements. Like I said, I do find PPP funny, but that doesn't mean I have to pretend he isn't a result of very, very harmful homophobia
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:28:21 UTC from web-
@tiffany I'm not saying he isn't. That doesn't mean he shouldn't exist.
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:31:09 UTC from web-
@nerthos I don't really know where I stand there. I feel like it's comparable to when Dr Seuss made a painting that said "take home a high-grade kiwir for your woodpile," and was very clearly racist. I wouldn't advocate its existence just because it wasn't necessarily Seuss' fault that he was raised in a world where that's okay. It's only really problematic in retrospect, and I think it's sort of the same here, that it's acceptable by proxy because we're raised to tolerate it.
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:41:56 UTC from web-
@tiffany I understand what you're saying. I guess the difference is that you take such things to heart while I accept the context and the culture it was created by, and don't hold anything against it unless it's directly causing something bad. I would complain about it saying "blacks are sub human" but not about something that was completely acceptable where and when it was made. I tend to deliberately keep myself out of any particular culture so none bother me.
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:48:20 UTC from web-
@nerthos I guess that's what it comes down to really, accepting and accounting that it comes from a bad place. I think that's all I really wanted to get across to you so I'm glad you understand
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:50:48 UTC from web-
@tiffany Regardless of how I stick to my ideas, I rarely miss the point.

@tiffany The show never really demonstrated itself to be anything I'd consider classy, but it bothers me when it's had characters like Mumen Rider show up with a compelling dramatic arc and the show afterwards continued to fall into its usual trappings of writing and construction.
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:02:36 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal I think season 1 mainly suffers because it was written by a humble webcomic artist. It's not like it's low-budget; I truly think that as it diverges from the original comic in later seasons it will manage to improve its character development and writing
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:05:32 UTC from web-
@tiffany Yeah, you can tell the writing isn't being done professionally or whatnot. So I guess for someone with priorities like my own One Punch Man felt like a mediocre action dramedy with occasion flashes of brilliance, but not enough to sustain an entire season.
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:11:02 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal I guess our different priorities are kind of why I disagree with you there. You're definitely more perceptive than me on the matter, but I consider OPM to be in the same boat as shows like BoJack and Rick and Morty, where the first season has a fraction of the depth that the overall story will have, and is more of an establishment than a full-throttle nosedive
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:13:42 UTC from web-
@tiffany The early Bojack episodes for me were only alright merely because they didn't really explore their themes enough for me to find them compelling more than on a base level, but the later episodes worked really well for me not only because of their generally stronger writing but also because the show became a complex character study of depression and the entertainment industry, which was only really possible from the requisite development of early episodes to give future drama context and weight. For me, I can't see One Punch Man as a show that will suddenly really sharply improve because while it has an overarching story most of its development is through vignettes, so its a lot more episodic and insular. By the end of the season I felt that it had already become trapped by ideas it had already articulated, and its humour had sort of run its course.
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:20:32 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal I think OPM can improve similarly, but whether or not it will is just a waiting game
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:23:32 UTC from web-
@tiffany Yeah, it could have a really good second season, but if it does I don't think it will be because of things the first season did. Also with a show like Bojack it was already showing leaps and bounds of improvement by the end of its first season.

@tiffany In the case of Rick and Morty while I overall prefer the second season I though both were really great, it wasn't a case of okay to fantastic more so great to greater. Rick and Morty has always had clever comedy mixed with surprisingly poignant character drama (not to mention giving Justin Roiland so many artistic liberties gives the show a certain eccentricity you really don't see in other modern cartoons).

@northernnarwhal It's basically the subversion of the usual drama sprinkled with humor to lighten the mood, having instead mostly humor sprinkled with action and drama.
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:05:46 UTC from web-
@nerthos I don't really think it's subverting much of anything (it's basically just gay panic humour) but I get that we're seeing this in different contexts
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:13:40 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal I see it as a show that's from the lets go presented as a joke unto itself, where almost everything is ridiculous and over the top, from the action to the characters to the stereotypes. Almost every character is extreme in all it's traits. Balanced, credible characters are the exception.
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:15:52 UTC from web-
@nerthos Except there are characters like Mumen Rider who come off as actually human, And even given the dramatic extremity (or lack thereof) of a character like Saitama, he's at least not playing into any really meaningfully harmful tropes. PPP is.
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:23:32 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal As I said, credible characters are the exception. Mumen Raider is the only semi-important character I can think of like that.
Tuesday, 29-Dec-15 19:25:58 UTC from web-
@nerthos Even still, I don't think it really takes away from the kind of character PPP is
