It's amazing that despite how really low budget this show obviously is it still manages to be really visually engaging through its surreal and actually quite pronounced directing. It's able to build an entire visual vocabulary around its atmosphere utilizing clever blocking, symbols, and cuts when necessary to give the viewer a ton of information through visual composition.

@northernnarwhal At the time, it was some of the crispest animation available in North America. Oh, and BoA!

@julianproxy Well I mean, when you put into consideration that Cowboy Bebop came out in the same year I'm not sure I'd necessarily agree with that, but the animation in Lain isn't really bad for the time. It's just very clearly low budget, Lain was a risky and experimental show and although Triangle Staff were composed of talented former Madhouse staff they were still a pretty small studio.
