Ty is right. "Dove" the verb and "dove" the noun are homographs
Saturday, 13-Feb-16 14:33:59 UTC from web-
@tiffany Yeah, homographs are when they're spelled the same but have different meanings.

@northernnarwhal I actually don't know the right term for "dove" v. "dived" either but I'd love to find out
Saturday, 13-Feb-16 14:36:01 UTC from web-
@tiffany I mean, I guess they're technically synonyms but I'm not sure if such a word exists to specifically describe the relationship of two words with the same meaning and tense from the same root word that have different spellings and/or pronunciations. Damn language, man.
Saturday, 13-Feb-16 14:39:46 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal As far as I can tell, synonyms comes closest
Saturday, 13-Feb-16 14:41:36 UTC from web-
@tiffany It wouldn't be wrong to call them synonyms, but synonyms refers broadly to words with the same meaning and isn't exclusive to a more particular case the way a word like "homograph" is
Saturday, 13-Feb-16 14:43:52 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal Like a midget in a swimming pool, Google came up short
Saturday, 13-Feb-16 14:45:00 UTC from web-
@tiffany I tried searching too and couldn't find anything
Saturday, 13-Feb-16 14:47:49 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal I'm disappointed
Saturday, 13-Feb-16 14:48:42 UTC from web-
@tiffany Hi disappointed, I'm dad, and you disappoint me

Saturday, 13-Feb-16 14:50:09 UTC from web-

Saturday, 13-Feb-16 14:50:35 UTC from web-
@tiffany SILENCE FOR PAPA

@tiffany the philologist in me would say 'dived', but the less stupid me would say 'whatever gets one's goat'
Saturday, 13-Feb-16 14:42:17 UTC from web-
@awl in that particular post I meant the term for two different words having the same meaning. I think I say "dove" but it's not something I've ever consciously thought of so I might say "dived"
Saturday, 13-Feb-16 14:44:10 UTC from web-
@tiffany we can invent one. Uh, synomorph? Homomorph?
Saturday, 13-Feb-16 14:47:40 UTC from web-
@awl The musician in me wants to say "inverted homograph"
Saturday, 13-Feb-16 14:48:31 UTC from web -
@awl I like the sound of homomorph. Could be my band name

@northernnarwhal @tiffany Does an author with crippling anxiety about selecting the wrong word of a homophonic pair have homophobia?
-
@northernnarwhal @tiffany They're there, get used to it.
