    2. @awl Interesting reading the translations of the old parables while listening the reconstructed versions of them, you can make out things like specific trills and intonation quirks that can be seen in modern Indo-European languages.

      1. @northernnarwhal Isn't it though? I mean it's pretty much all conjecture as the language never had letters but interesting stuff nonetheless. I recorded a Maycan translation of it two days ago.

        1. @awl The fact that it's conjecture in and of itself is fascinating too, because it demonstrates how a language will be explicitly attached to the culture it inhabits.

          1. @northernnarwhal Part of why those particular sounds are in it because of how we view Stone Age cultures. Schleicher's example illustrates like a bokmaal, a literary take, versus the modern PIE reconstructionist take which focuses more on the phonological. Sort of a turn in comparative linguistics on the whole.

            1. @awl Yeah, the reconstructionist perspective places a much greater emphasis on the distinct structure of the language, whereas Schleicher's interpretation focuses on how disparate vocabulary would construct narrative. Both require a specific context exhibited by language that is missing from PIE outright, so meditations on it are meditations on the nature of language itself. It's interesting to really ponder.
