I like to think that University is becoming less of a necessity nowadays but it's easy for me to say as someone who isn't going lol

@tiffany from what I've seen college at least pretty much helps you get into work that allows you to live with a degree of comfort, below that good luck.
-
@tiffany It's not a necessity per se, but it's certainly helpful. You can live just fine without it, but you'll have to be lucky to have a great life without.
-
@tiffany You'll be able to make enough to have a normal life if you aren't stupid, just don't expect a big house and expensive car.
-
@tiffany in europe it could be easier (sorry, Uk). In Italy I couldn't find a job but that's because Italy has that problem already.
-
@nerthos The only potentially stupid thing I plan on doing anytime soon is getting a place with Joe that our friend's mother is subletting. The rent's like £300 a month so split between two (or more) people it's crazy cheap and I hope it'll be a good experience with minimal risk
-
@tiffany That should be decent, but who's Joe?
-
@awl I mean, I do already have a job sorted really. Dunno how sustainable it'll be but I was planning on finding another job regardless
-
@tiffany on top of my current one that is
-
@nerthos My friend of four or so years
-
@tiffany Then you should be ok. At that point you have to be very stupid to not know the guy
-
@nerthos I know him well enough that I know we'll probably butt heads a lot but we'll still be cool. It's probably a good thing if anything to be kept on your toes like that
-
@tiffany Yeah, being TOO buddy buddy can potentially lead to recklessness.
-
@tiffany Depending on your industry/location of choice, sure. I mean, I have no college and less than a year of work experience and I'm already making good pay with lots of benefits (and near-constant pay raises!), but that was a combination of lucking into a workplace that was willing to take a risk with me and the web development field being INCREDIBLY lucrative right now, so
-
@redenchilada That said, the mentality of "you NEED a college education" is pretty toxic in general. It definitely helps for some industries, but going just because you were coerced leads to nothing but debt. (My dad has a 4yr in something architectural/electrical that he didn't really wanna get, and he didn't gain a thing out of it.)
-
@redenchilada I hope I luck out like that but I don't even know what it is I wanna luck out into
-
@tiffany Well, if you ever decide computers >= social life, the web industry has a low barrier to entry and often has work-from-home opportunities lol
-
@redenchilada All I've really looked into as far as online work so far is audio transcription, as I have a bit of experience there (probably not really necessary but hey) and I may have a bit of interest in it to numb the hours of tedium. I'll be exploring a lot more options starting next week though
