Finally I had full access to the HTC Vive without having anyone besides me to share with. I tried a linear gain to extend the virtual walking area. A gain of 2 is a comfortable maximum for me. I used a gain of 3 and it was quite extreme but I could manage it fairly decently when walking. Any bend down irritated my sense of balance slightly. A female friend of mine had problems with a gain of 1.2 and above. Another friend (male) had slight problems with 2.

@adiwan interesting, I wonder if with more test subjects you could find a correlation between how men and women perceive it.

@l1ghtsword Well... This is part of my Master Thesis to make user studies of different methods to traverse in virtual space using head-mounted devices (with or without motion controllers).
