We are now entering hour three of the thrilling stand-off between @moonman and his archiac yet open sourced chat client. He has been unable to connect to the user who he wishes to talk to, which makes one wonder - what is the point of a chat client that needs this much time to set up when fast and easy alternatives exist? Is ideological purity really worth this much time spent on tweaking and trial and error when even American Online Instant Messenger would serve the same purpose? Is a chat client that does not allow you to chat effectively even a chat client, or is it an exercise rooted in idealism instead of practicality?

        1. @vriska okeydoke no biggie.

as a side note though, I'm not really doing anything special, just set up my own server.

            1. @maiyannah @moonman I tried to set up a client on windows on my old laptop and it took me the better part of two hours and its like yeah I get why open source is good and privacy is good but if the NSA wants to read my rambling about the Cryptic Ancient Unknowable Secrets i dont really mind

              1. @vriska @moonman It's funny because this is exactly my experience with IRC and why I prefer XMPP haha

                1. @maiyannah @moonman IRC was a cakewalk for me compared to XMPP

                      1. @vriska @maiyannah there are ten thousand xmpp clients and they all suck

                        2. @moonman @vriska Psy+ is basically meant for uh, powerusers at the least.  Its what admins use to debug xmpp servers when they go FrankerZty.

Interesting. I have found that I do get some issues with XMPP, like there are times where it is down, or it won't connect when I leave pidgin for a while.

                    1. @sim @moonman @maiyannah really I'd direct you to my earlier herzogpost and that's kinda how I feel about it. Nothing I'm saying requires that level of encryption to say it. I'd rather not have finnicky spaghetti coded patchwork when i need to contact someone

Touche. I kind of like having that level of encryption, but I would prefer that it worked properly too.

              2. @vriska do you already use the google one

I could try just linking up to that one. i am not sure but I think that still works

                2. @moonman You will have to add google to the insecure domains because it uses dialback but gtalk should still work.  OTR and most extensible features don't work though and they have to have actually used gtalk when it was called that

          2. @moonman cool!

maybe someday I will make the switch to Xtreme Merriweather Post Pavilion

      2. @moonman I mean i see why in theory its a good thing but I don't really have anything to say that requires that level of encryption.
