  1. Considering what can be done with digital downloadable content these days, are disc-release sequels really even necessary? !vg # #

    1. @retl Sometimes it's more convenient to have a disc-release sequel rather than having an update or digital release sequal taking up a massive chunk of the system's harddrive.

      1. @ponystark: This is a good point. Also, some systems can run some games without a harddrive (Xbox), and in the case of people with capped/limited connections, downloads could end up being more pricey or impractical than a disc. Didn't think of that at the time.

    2. @retl Yes. A physical copy is always a necessity for future preservation.

      1. @rpb3000 Sorta? But arguably, if data preservation was more taken care of by allowing transfer to different filesystems and data formats at will, then it should last much longer than a fragile disc by being moved to solid state media and back or to another readable form if going the emulation route.

        1. @retl There is truth to the fact that even well-maintained media has a disturbingly short lifespan. And yet, copies of copies introduce bit creep. Data preservation for posterity and the benefit of future generations is a very interesting yet touchy topic.
