This is why I only ban when it becomes neccesary to protect the majority of the instance users. Blocks exist on the user level and that's much more preferable for all involved in most cases.
-
When I as an admin ban someone on the instance I am basically enforcing a block on _each and every single user_. As such it really ought to be done as a last resort if at all, because it's imposing a decision on your userbase.
At the very least, if you're a smart admin, you do so only when the majority agrees with the ban.-
Let's be honest though, the majority of mastodon prolly agrees with a ban of me.
-
@maiyannah Well, you're a minority traitor after all!

@maiyannah what did u do

@moonman It was probably this post

@maiyannah The population of mastodon consists of the people the admin hasn't banned yet and since he seems to pretty much ban everyone who disagrees with him it's sufficient for him to agree with a ban of you.
-
@verius Well, we got a few new users over this evening with migrants after the last bout of that.

@maiyannah Generally site bans should be reserved for people who have done something hienous, or clash immensely with the site's community rules.

@nerthos The only time I've every really banned was that one chain-gang from masto that was going after pretty much everyone on the wider fediverse really.
And a couple of loli posters for legal reasons.

@maiyannah Despite the flack the Quitter nodes get, they at least block users rather than instances.
-
@takeFluffle Puffakenji The only time I feel an instance ban is consciable is when there's legal reasons.
-
@takebananaakenji They handled this whole social tension a lot better, I feel. The Eternal February they had worked out much better because Hannes was much less heavy-handed.
-
@maiyannah Also, they were already there when Eternal February started, and understood what federation entails.
Mastodon was the new party this time around, and it's obvious the users largely have never had any idea what they're doing with federation.-
@takekiwiakenji The thing is they didn't want to understand either. It wasn't like there weren't plenty of people (at least at the start) that were happy to try to explain the federation to them.
-
@maiyannah And Eternal February folks found it to be either fascinating or interesting for the most part.
-
@takecherryakenji Most of them resolved to either make their own server or join a better one. A lot of them ended up on Potato Knishesposter.club

you walk into an empty bar and sit down with your drink. it's been thirty minutes and the bar is still empty. you look at the door and notice a very long piece of paper. it's a list of all the people banned from the bar. it goes from the top of the door to the floor. feelings of regret bubble up as you realize you just wasted 30 minutes of your life going to a bar without people.

-
@rw @maiyannah @takekiwiakenji @mono it was a very dreamy show

@takeFrankerZakenji @rw @mono @maiyannah It is. Lynch ups the tension relentlessly. I happen to be watching it for the second time just now.
