With no-content articles being voted to the top and angersock fighting a losing battle against 'culture' articles, I think lobsters will go the way of HN. (https://lobste.rs/s/r0a5cp/deleting_uber_is_least_you_can_do)

@lambadalambda Meanwhile over here Uber has been locked in a legal battle with taxi drivers for over a year.

@nerthos @lambadalambda hackernews has always been FrankerZ

@nerthos The alternative Lambada's talking about has always been banana. I'm not sure why anyone emulates it.
-
@maiyannah Oh. It threw me off as you replied to my post rather than his.

@nerthos Well, Uber's always been kiwi too.
-
@maiyannah IDK I'm happy with anything that FrankerZs up the taxi monopoly, since they're thieves with their pricing. I wouldn't mind both going under due to their fight.

@nerthos The enemy of my enemy is usually just another enemy.

@maiyannah Lobsters for all its good intentions has long since become at least equally kiwi as HN.

@verius @maiyannah I'm getting sadder and sadder when I see angersock's comments. He tries to make it a good site, but the other users don't care.
-
@lambadalambda @verius Unfortunately the userbase can be stupid, and I kind of think the hacker news "style" stuff and other reddit-like upvoting/downvoting systems attract idiots.
-
@maiyannah @lambadalambda I remember when I got started with Linux slashdot had a really bad rep for being full of insulting idiots. Somehow all major sites attract that nonsense.
Reddit is actually one of the better sites as long as you stick to subreddits with a clear focus and a no bullFrankerZ policy. E.g. programming is fairly decent. On the other hand I don't even want to look at the major news subreddits.-
@verius @lambadalambda Reddit works okay in a highly controlled environment but for me the problems associated with mining through all the papaya to find the good stuff isn't worth it for me in an internet with far too many other sites without that barrier to entry.
-
@maiyannah @lambadalambda Got any good tips on decent general programming news sites then?
-
@verius @lambadalambda You lost me at news :P
I generally follow more blocks of particular hackers and such than the actual news site. For eg I follow KrebsOnSecurity-
@maiyannah @lambadalambda I guess I'm more of a "stumble upon interesting stuff" kind of person, less of a "full list of RSS". Though maybe I should try that, shouldn't be that hard to install a proper RSS management thingy.
-
@verius @lambadalambda Well aggregation is ultimately what both Slashdot (for example) and a collection of RSS feeds through a reader are doing - the difference with the latter is that it's a list of people that I know post interesting stuff, like Stallman, Krebs, etc. But I get what you mean, yeah, its why I do still visit slashdot once or twice a week
