Why do people like Calvin & Hobbes so much? Is it an American thing? Like reading Ayn Rand?
-
@lambadalambda people love it here too, the localized version atleast, is not liking calvin & hobbes some nazi thing???
-
@shpuld Might be!
-
-
@lambadalambda Probably because they're pretty witty if you're used to a very standard view of the world.

@nerthos Maybe that's the reason I don't get it. It's not that it's bad, but it just seems like rather obvious witty observations. Not as bad as xkcd by a long shot, though.
-
@lambadalambda @nerthos Dude. It's for twelve-year-olds who miss the time when they were six and life wasn't so complicated. I don't read it much now, because now it's just "yeah, that's life". Back then, it was revelation. "YES, EXACTLY!".
-
-
@lambadalambda @nerthos I think that's it.
-
@lambadalambda @nerthos @clacke I bet you didn't read ayn rand as a child either
-
@shpuld @lambadalambda @nerthos It was my go-to rape fiction when I was seven.
-
@clacke @nerthos @lambadalambda kids these days have 50 shades of gray and all that
-

-
Neither did I, I first read it in high school. Do you not like the humor, or the occasional philosophical asides? @lambadalambda @nerthos @clacke
-
-
-
Are you reading it in something other than English? @lambadalambda @nerthos

Calvin & Hobbes
>old, timely, simple
xkcd
>amateur, cuckish, for nerds by nerds
hm.-
@zine @nerthos @lambadalambda C&H is much more sincere
-
Simple? The sample I linked above shows Calvin's dad running a bizarre lie on his own son. It's not the only time he's done it and his pleasure is blatantly tinged with sadism. Do people actually read these things before judging them? @zine @nerthos @lambadalambda
-
@somercet @lambadalambda @nerthos @zine That's "haha, that's so random" humor.
I like C&H because it's like coming home. I don't think there's a single strip I could point to and say "oh wow, lambda, come look at this, isn't that the most amazing strip ever?!".
Hyperactive six-year-old slice of life.-
Like the time he told Calvin he was purchased at Kmart and Calvin freaked? Or told him they were just going to leave the Christmas, undecorated, in the garage? https://Potato Knishesposter.club/attachment/492147 @clacke @nerthos @lambadalambda @zine
-
@somercet @lambadalambda @nerthos @zine Haha, that's so random! Telling the kid he's from the supermarket just to mess with him and/or avoid having to talk about flowers and bees.
It's funny because we love Calvin and his dad, and dad's little mind games that nobody really knows why he is playing. Maybe he's a brilliant skeptic, who is training his kid's critical thinking? Who knows. But it makes you want to be a dad. >:->

This strip is odd, since the "punch line" is all in the poem's build-up; the rest is denouement. @clacke @nerthos @lambadalambda @zine https://FrankerZposter.club/attachment/492163

It's sweet that he's such an upstanding citizen that he follows the rules to the dot, even though he is playing a game in his own fantasy world and looks like a total weirdo to Suzy doing it. Gotta appreciate the dedication. Also, Calvinball is so random!
As for myself, I have made deals with gods I don't believe in mostly for fun, and followed the deal even though I really would have been happier not doing it, just because whatever I wanted to happen came true. Certain types of brains enjoy rules and following them. -

@lambadalambda @somercet @nerthos @zine Calvin. Also, to some extent: Hobbes.
-
@lambadalambda @somercet @nerthos @zine Calvin can be very melodramatic.

Ever heard of: "Don't judge a book by its cover"?
>sadism
hardly if any.

What the heck is wrong with C&H? @nerthos @lambadalambda
-
@somercet Nothing in particular. I like it.

@somercet @nerthos Nothing, I just don't understand why people love it so much. It seems like just a good comic to me.
-
@lambadalambda @somercet @nerthos You think it's "just good" now. Back in 1985 it was THE BOMB. The alternatives were Beetle Bailey and enwp.org/91:an_%28comic_strip%29 .
