        @nerthos libreOffice can at least read MS word documents without cherryting up.  RTF has never been consistently formatted on any word processor.

          @maiyannah I'd use rtf back in the day because it was readable by winxp without any extra software and everyone had xp. .doc I'd avoid as much as possible since I didn't want to install a suite like libreoffice or msoffice or whatever to use twice a year.
