  1. I'm willing to bet they get a deal of maritime training in either way. Navy and marine corp, from what I've seen, still have a closer relationship in the US. Not like the motherland but still, it's there.

    1. @awl AFAIK they get ship time, just not actual sea combat most of the time.

      1. @nerthos yeah. I think the roles change more with the evolution of combat. Nowadays naval warfare hardly sees boarding. And the usmc would get mixed in landings to vamp up numbers.

        1. @awl @nerthos Boarding actions these days are mostly anti-piracy (er, the REAL piracy), and to be honest, most somolian pirates are not well-trained or well-armed and generally try to avoid the actual navies of the world's militaries.

          1. @awl @nerthos One of my good friends was boarding party on the Winnipeg when it was doing anti-piracy actions some time ago.

            1. @maiyannah couldn't imagine the excitement in that kind of operation.

              1. @awl I imagine the pirates were very excited to see them, yes ;)

          2. @maiyannah @awl Yep, most pirate ships are tiny, and the few times boarding is possible is when they have taken a ship's crew as hostages, so regular soldiers would be useless, you have to use a tactical unit that's more akin to cops than soldiers.

            1. @nerthos @awl RCN boarding parties are basically Canadian navy SWAT, yeah.
