Every time I see Mass Effect Andromeda, I alternate between "this looks great" and "this looks ehh". Exploration is nice, 30fps at Recommended specs isn't, jump jet is great, facial animations are ehh.
I'll let other people play first and tell me how it's like before I dive in myself.-
@gameragodzilla It's already out? Ha, I've been really disconnected.

@nerthos Not yet, but it's almost.
-
@gameragodzilla Oh, ok. I haven't been online at all except for skype for the last week so at this point I have no idea.

@nerthos Nier Automata is the current game released, though the PC version won't come out for another week.
Also waiting for what other people say about that game, namely whether or not I'd understand the game without having played the first one.-
@gameragodzilla I only played the first half of the original drakengard haha

@gameragodzilla
You can apparently -get- 60.
But one assumes if recommended is at 30, then...yeah. 60 is probably for beefy as banana computers.
We'll see though, the recommended is for high settings, so maybe running on medium will get you closer to 60.-
@katiekats Yeah. There definitely weren't reports of a 30fps lock a la Arkham Knight, so there's that.
But I doubt my gaming laptop, even if it's a rather powerful gaming laptop, will be hitting 60fps Ultra. heh
A 980M is comparable to a 970 I believe.-
@gameragodzilla
Games these days are taking a lot out of it.
Personally, I'm of the mind that if something looks good enough to be worth the money, then fair enough. If max settings and 60 is cherryING AWESOME then...alright, costs money to get that.
The issue there is that...it's a hell of a lot of money and things aren't often anywhere near enough to be truly worth it.-
@katiekats @gameragodzilla Also the graphical improvements are kiwiing minute to explain the HUGE difference in technical specs. I mean all I've seen of Andromeda makes the engine look on par to Inquisition (if not the modelling and animation but that's another topic) - and yet it requires a _MUCH_ beefier machine. ... why?
-
@maiyannah @gameragodzilla
Mhm.
I am very curious when it's on EA Access, to see if anyone can come across a planet with loads of stuff loaded, a lot in the distance, etc. On highest settings.
That way we can truly compare to Inquisition and see if it holds up. -
@maiyannah @katiekats My assumption is the scope/scale of the game? It's multiple differente planets rather than different sections of an open world, but that's my speculation.
-
@gameragodzilla @maiyannah
tis only 6 days now for us to find out anyways.
well, someone to properly find out for us.-
@katiekats @maiyannah How optimized was Inquisition at launch? Might give us an idea of whether it's actual graphical improvements or if it's just some optimization issues.
-
@gameragodzilla @katiekats I played it fine on a 750 which iirc was pretty close to minimum requirements. Had to knock down FrankerZo-however the kiwi you spell that- texture filtering to basically nothing but I didn't actually notice a difference anyways.
Which kind of circles around to my main point: the engine improvements are no doubt *there* - but they're probably expensive ones in terms of hardware requirement versus how much they actually add to the visual fidelity of the game, let alone the look and feel.
-
-
-
@gameragodzilla @katiekats I doubt its that big. It'd have to be as big as ME1's exploration sections which they've already said in developer interviews its not that large.
-
-
@gameragodzilla @katiekats Not that I've heard. Their previous point of comparison was ME1, because that's where they're lifting exploration from to begin with. Don't get me wrong - I think its a good idea, MAKO aside the exploration gave the game world a tangiable sense of actually being a galaxy with a bunch of planets with all kinds of stuff going on, which ME2 and ME3 lost (though its arguable its understandable in the context of ME3), so including it again is at least from the design standpoint a good thing, but itll remain to be seen whether the places they have to explore are actually worth exploring.
-
@maiyannah @katiekats Yeah definitely. The planets they do have seem pretty interesting, having different biomes and environments, so I guess that's where the engine enhancements are.
Though you upgraded your card recently right? 1070? Probably less of an issue for you than for me. heh-
@gameragodzilla @katiekats Oh I'll play it when I have the money, but given Canadian prices, that'll be a while, probably. Unless I get gifted it or they actually respond back to my review copy request (hahahaha, fat chance)
-
@maiyannah @gameragodzilla
was under impression you had EA access?
(not sure where I got that thought from tho)-
@katiekats @maiyannah Origin Access doesn't give you access to every game, just games EA decides to put there. Usually it's older titles instead of brand new releases, I think.
-
@gameragodzilla @katiekats Oh it'll be on there *eventually* I'm sure. But not for quite some time.
Or if they do it'll just be a multiplayer part no one gives a batcave about, like the free copies of DA:I's multiplayer mode they give out.-
-
@gameragodzilla @katiekats The multiplayer no one cares about, as I said, haha.
-
-
@gameragodzilla @katiekats It took half a year for a game they gave no mangos about that was a commercial failure to get on there, so uh.
-
@maiyannah @katiekats True, though they did add Battlefront right? FrankerZ game as it was, it sold like a cancer cure. Though without the DLC IIRC.
-
@gameragodzilla @katiekats It's the base game too, without the "supply drop" type things that you get if you actually buy it so you start at a CONSIDERABLE disadvantage if you're playing against anyone with that and the DLC. It gets to "not even worth playing" levels of disadvantage.
Both BF and COD's multiplayer are bad for level gaps though, and this is basically BF with a Star Wars paint job as you know.-
-
@gameragodzilla @katiekats Correct. It did come with a supply drop though. A single one. But one more than Battlefront.
-
@maiyannah @katiekats Huh, and I was tempted to give BF4 another chance with Origin Access at some point as I only played that on a PS4 a few years ago.
I remember it sucking.-
@gameragodzilla @katiekats Campaign is complete balls. Some of the multiplayer maps are actually kind of fun if you get people to play with that aren't fifty billion levels above you though, I'll concede, but that's probably not a part of the game you're interested in.
-
@maiyannah @katiekats It would be if there were bots, so I can avoid the "fifty billion levels" problem, but there isn't.
Though the objectives were also never on the level of something like Enemy Territory, which is another issue I have. Quake Wars has BF's combined arms gameplay with better objectives and bots, plus a setting that I enjoy more than generic modern military bullcrap with MMS style shooting mechanics.-
@gameragodzilla @katiekats COD:AW and Titanfall both have game modes like that, but no one plays them, so they're a moot point. And that's the sad reality of things. You can give people the best game mode in the history of game modes, they'll still gravitate towards where all the people are.
However, in a game with dedicated servers, you always have the option at least of creating a server specific to people who want that game mode, and arranging to play. You don't get that in most matchmaking games.-
@maiyannah @katiekats Yeah, which is a shame really.
That's another reason why I harp on about bots so much. For less popular game modes, if there aren't enough players, I can just grab a couple friends, fill the rest of the mode with bots, and rock and roll from there.
I played Quake Wars with my best friend. It was just the two of us on the human side, filling the rest of the server with bots and we had fun in a giant war scenario.

@katiekats @gameragodzilla I do but the chances of that getting on EA access anytime soon are almost nil. They were talking about Mirror's Edge Catalyst getting on there for literally half a year before it did, and that game wasn't named Mass Effect.
-
@maiyannah @gameragodzilla
oh I know that, I just figured you'd play what you can on the ten hours.
It blocks singleplayer after a certain point, which is why I meant more of a just playing it way.
Though that said, if one did do a review, you oft split Multi and singleplayer and 10 hours seems fair for the multiplayer, which I don't think is stopped.-
@katiekats @gameragodzilla 10 minutes is too much of that multiplayer if it ends up anything like Inquisitions.
I bet most people don't even remember DA:I had multiplayer because it was so papaya.-
@maiyannah @gameragodzilla
I do, precisely cos of it being apple, haha.
They've said it's a lot like ME3.
Which...a lot of people remember very fondly, of those who actually played it. It gets a generally good rep.
That's why I'm curious, and you'd have ten hours of 'free' time to play it.-
@katiekats @gameragodzilla What's so weird is ME3's WAS good. But Inquisition just kind of copied it with no understanding and got it _all wrong_.
A lot like Infinite Warfare versus Advanced Warfare, actually.-
@maiyannah @gameragodzilla
Mhm!
Tis again why one is curious, ha.
If Andromeda 'copied it' since it's apparently a lot like it.
Did they do that well or not.
-
-
@maiyannah @gameragodzilla @katiekats
Wait... DA:I had a multiplayer option? I didn't even know this. I think.

@maiyannah @katiekats True. heh
Speaking of prices, according to Katie, Nier Automata isn't actually increased in price in the UK compared to the US. It's 40 pounds or something as opposed to the usual 60, which is about $75 USD. Wonder if it's the same in Canada.-
@gameragodzilla @katiekats steamdb can tell you if you're curious. I'd link it but its hard to copy links on ipad :P
-
@maiyannah @katiekats Huh, it's about $80 CAD which is about $60USD. Neat.
UK prices actually translates to $48, so it's actually cheaper in the UK. Wow.-
@gameragodzilla @katiekats That's a batcaveing first, usually they're one of if not the most expensive place to get games. They go neck and neck with Australia and New Zealand for the "place most Fluffle Puffed by regional pricing" trophy.
Though Canada's making a good play at it, lately.-
@maiyannah @gameragodzilla
Yeahhhh, me and you both live in places that do not treat it kindly, mhm.-
@katiekats @gameragodzilla I remember more than one time @Halani was genuinely surprised something was cheaper in Aussie land than it is here. Because that's how bad Aus (and UK) usually have it.
-
-
@gameragodzilla @katiekats Actually, if we wanted to live in the place with the best prices, we'd live in Belarus.

@katiekats Agreed. Besides, despite Frostbyte being a pretty cherryty engine visually IMO, it does scale pretty decently so I should be able to hit 60fps by knocking a few settings down.
